A Saúde Pública brasileira vem se estruturando tendo como cerne o fortalecimento da Atenção Primária em Saúde. Para um sistema forte e efetivo é necessária a capacitação de profissionais para atuarem nessa área. Diante disso surgem estratégias como a criação dos Programas de Residência Multiprofissional em Saúde da Família. O objetivo deste relato é pontuar a atuação do cirurgião-dentista dentro de um programa de residência, apontando as dificuldades e potencialidades desse processo. A experiência se deu no município de Cascavel, dentro de um programa já existente, contando com o envolvimento de profissionais dentistas, enfermeiros e assistentes sociais, cujos locais de atuação eram Unidades de Saúde da Família. O resultado dessa interação multiprofissional mostrou-se positivo porque permitiu que os residentes desenvolvessem uma visão amplificada de suas atuações, melhorando as suas práticas individuais e contribuindo com a coletividade dentro da equipe. Parte desse deslocamento se deu em virtude da aplicação dos conceitos de Educação Permanente e Educação Popular em Saúde que promovem o pensar reflexivo através da problematização. Dessa forma, pode-se perceber que o Programa de Residência Multiprofissional em Saúde da Família contribui para o aperfeiçoamento das habilidades dos trabalhadores de saúde e para o fortalecimento da Atenção Primária em Saúde.
As discussões e reflexões acerca da formação dos profissionais de saúde tornaram-se frequentes, considerando a necessidade de recursos humanos qualificados para atender às demandas oriundas do SUS. Visto ser necessária uma mudança no modelo de formação dos profissionais, uma das estratégias utilizadas é a Residência Multiprofissional.
