AbstractThis paper presents an analysis of the roofs of recently built singlefamily homes in Concepción, Chile in order to identify their potential for integrated solar energy collection. It seeks to promote the installation of domestic renewable energy systems in the face of growing residential energy consumption. The study comprises 2,139 homes in the district, all of which are part of residential developments built since 2006 (68.28% of total homes built over this period). The houses all have pitched roofs with a mean azimuth of 37.48°. The largest or second largest roof section was identified for each housing model, facing north, east or west with an average area of 33.9 sqm. This roof surface receives a total annual solar radiation of between 954 kWh/sqm and 1,732.8 kW/sqm (depending on size, azimuth and pitch), which, equipped with average-performance integrated photovoltaic panels, could supply a mean value of 6.317.2 kWh/year. This production could fully supply the average household annual electricity consumption, with surplus production either fed into the national grid or contributing to household heating needs. Dual production was also assessed with thermo-photovoltaic hybrid technology that could double useful energy production. Results show that the roof characteristics of new housing are compatible with integrated solar collection.
Mangrove ecosystems are of significant environmental and economic importance. Large populations worldwide depend on mangroves for their resources and food supply. Following mangrove data of 1997, Ecuador had an area of 2,469 km² of mangroves. This area has suffered some reductions due to farming, industrial activities, and urbanization in recent years. At the same time, local communities depend on the collection and commercialization of mangrove products as their primary income source. Infrastructure projected in mangrove areas needs a remarkable treatment with a holistic approach to consider technological, social, environmental, and economic aspects. The project will focus on the community 6 de Julio of the zone of Naranjal-Ecuador. One of the primary income sources of this community is the collection and commercialization of the mangrove crab, which is collected at the nearby mangrove areas authorized by the Ministry of Environment, for which the community needs to abide by the regulations and closure periods to guarantee the sustainability of the activity. The primary research's objective is to study the best infrastructure options to help with the crab collection activity. So, it is safer and cleaner and aims to diversify activities such as touristic or educational that can become an alternative income source during the closure periods and reduce the dependence on the crab collection.
Architectural integration of active solar energy systems (hybrid collectors with air) on dwelling´s roofs is reviewed, in recent single housing of Concepcion, Chile. Influence of volumetric configuration of roof and sides is identified. Also roof azimuth incidence was reviewed establishing that considerable deviations are allow without losing high irradiation rates. It is concluded that irradiation levels between 73% and 39% of the domestic demand in a winter day is available on average Largest Roof Section (LRS) or Second Larger Roof Section (SLRS) indexes. Then, Building Integration Photovoltaic & Thermal with Air Cooling technology was hypothetically displayed in the highest LRS house and in the lower SLRS house. These analysis showed that, LRS case production reach a 585% of the electricity demand an average day of summer and 41% in winter. Considering the SLRS case, energy production of 185% of the electricity demand is expected an average day of summer, but in a winter day only 10%. Finally, a relationship between long sides of building to get larger roof sections for active solar potential was found.
The use of solar energy in buildings requires defining proper systems according to different urban typologies. This paper presents a strategy for assessment in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and a parametric analysis of an detached housing typology in Building Information Modeling (BIM), which demonstrates an integrated approach to estimate solar energy potential, applied to the context of Concepción, Chile. Residential areas are identified with different energy consumption and solar capture in roofs, walls or outside space recorded in a urban GIS, and checks the architectural implementation of a roofing system in residential buildings through an integrated evaluation and design in BIM.
