AbstractThis paper is an original research article that analyses the concept of ecovillages as an alternative response to inequality in Latin America. The objective of this study was to carry out a critical analysis of ecovillages focusing on aspects of equity and commitment to the environment, incorporating in the analysis three cases developed in Latin America. The hypothesis is that the advantages of ecovillages as a social paradigm in the face of the crisis of poverty and inequality have not been considered or valued, nor their relevance in the circumstances of emerging countries. The methodology is based on theoretical and empirical contrasts of ecovillages, supported by the comparison of a qualitative analysis based on 4 features: economic, environmental, inclusive and social, as well as the consideration of 7 indicators of urban habitats according to UN Habitat, namely: a. Security of tenure, b. Availability of services, materials, facilities and infrastructure, c. Affordability, d. Habitability, e. Accessibility, f. Location and g. Cultural appropriateness. Three ecovillages developed in Latin America are analysed in this way: a. Ecovillage Huehuecóyotl, located in Tepoztlán, Morelos, Mexico; b. Ecovillage Aldeafeliz, located in Tepoztlán, Morelos, Mexico. and c. Ecovilla Gaia, located in Navarro, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The results led to outline a prospective vision of ecovillages, focused on the change of functional paradigms, ownership, materials, dimensions, etc. and it is concluded that the principles on which they are based must bevalued in order to reduce inequality in Latin America. Keywords: Ecovillages, inequality, inequality, habitat, housing, sustainability.
