O bioma Mata Atlântica é considerado um dos sete hotspots mundiais, a preservação e conservação desses ambientes são fundamentais para a manutenção da biodiversidade local, e a fragmentação é um fator muito prejudicial para ambientes que sofrem efeitos de borda. A mesorregião Sul da Bahia é composta por 70 municípios, localizados na porção litorânea do Estado. O mapeamento de uso da terra da coleção 5 foi adquirido gratuitamente na base de dados Mapbiomas para os anos de 1985 a 2019 e segmentado para a mesorregião Sul da Bahia e analisados os tipos de uso de terra. A fragmentação foi analisada pelas métricas de paisagem, calculados utilizando o complemento LecoS, no software QGIS 3.12 e o Microsoft Office Excel para estatística dos fragmentos. A mesorregião apresenta 18 tipos de uso da terra e um volume de 65.534 fragmentos florestais. Os resultados indicam uma região caracterizada por ações antrópicas, as métricas de paisagens evidenciam fragmentos com características alongadas e com grandes áreas. Apesar desses fragmentos sofrerem efeitos de bordas, os fragmentos com uma relação perímetro/área maior tendem a ter uma biodiversidade protegida devido a extensão do fragmento. Dessa forma, é preciso medidas que contenham esse avanço de fragmentação que ocorre ao logo dos 34 anos analisados, dessa forma evitar maiores perdas de biodiversidade para a região.

Elfany Reis do Nascimento Lopes e a estudante Escarlett de Arruda Ramos apresentam um estudo sobre a fragmentação florestal e seu impacto direto nos ecossistemas atlânticos, com análise dos mapeamentos temporais de uso da terra do programa Mapbiomas entre os anos de 1985 a 2019, com base na segmentação das áreas de formação florestal natural na mesorregião Sul da Bahia.
