texto con agradecimiento a su colega, el Profesor Domingo Ramos-Lissón, «que con su trabajo científico ha contribuido tanto a la comprensión de la teología y espiritualidad patrísticas».El presente estudio plantea la relación entre autobiografía y hagiografía, concretamente en tres vidas de monjes y en algunas necrológicas escritas por San Jerónimo. Estos escritos, advierte el autor, no se pueden asignar en igual medida, es decir, unívocamente a la hagiografía, porque es un género literario que admite muchas interpretaciones y se estaba todavía constituyendo en esa época. Así, por ejemplo, la necrológica de Paulina se convierte repentinamente en una laudatio a Pammaquio; la carta a Océano, sobre la muerte de Fabiola, no describe realmente la vida de una santa, sino que ofrece la historia de una conversión penitente; y algo similar se puede decir de la vida de Maleo. A Jerónimo le interesan, en estas vidas, ante todo las distintas formas de vida de monjes, no de santos; y, en lo que se refiere a las necrológicas, ofrece biografías espirituales de mujeres ascetas destacadas, y no hagiografías en sentido, estricto. No obstante, hechas estas salvedades, todos los textos seleccionados son aptos para manifestar el puesto especial de Jerónimo en la hagiografía.
Distinto de otros hagiógrafos, como por ejemplo Paulino o Sulpicio Severo, que se limitan a insistir al comienzo de la Vita en la veracidad de su narración y al final exhortan al lector a rezar una oración por el autor, Jerónimo interviene con frecuencia en el discurso con observaciones y juicios personales que reflejan sus deseos y temores. Admira la renuncia de Hilarión al honor y al reconocimiento, y se muestra fascinado por laalta posición social de su héroe y por el aprecio que se le tributa. Le irritan los ataques y las sospechas por parte de los envidiosos y critica duramente a Roma y sus habitantes por las vejaciones que le habían hecho sufrir. En algunas descripciones detalladas se traslucen determinados estados de ánimo y preferencias. Así, por ejemplo, Jerónimo logra una descripción idílica de la cueva en la que se había refugiado San Pablo Eremita. San Pablo y también San Antonio, al pie de su montaña, no luchan contra tentaciones y demonios, sino que viven en una tranquilidad paradisíaca.
