Catch data of the yellowfin tuna (YFT) fishery were used to study the relationship between the seasonal and spatial variations of YFT with or without the presence of mesoscale structures at the entrance to the Gulf of California (19º–24º N, 104º–112º W). The YFT catches were distributed mainly over the continental shelf and around islands and seamounts. High concentration sets of YFT occurred throughout the year around the Marías islands and Cabo Corrientes, particularly in March and June. A warm (>28ºC) coastal jet with a width of 1.5 Rossby radius (~20.6 km) was observed off Cabo Corrientes during February and April, covering all the continental shelf off Cabo Corrientes. The jet moved at an average speed of 0.31 m s–1 and extended northwards to the Roca Corbetera seamount. The interaction with cooler water generated a frontal zone around which the YFT catches were concentrated. In contrast, during March the wind field was more favorable for the development of coastal upwelling off Cabo Corrientes. We observed an upwelling region with sea surface temperature of 18ºC and an offshore width of about a 3.7 Rossby radius of cold water that covered some 2600 km2. The YFT catches occurred in warmer water north of the upwelling zone.
Palabras clave: Estructuras dinámicas de mesoescala, clorofila-a, temperatura superficial del mar, batimetría, mamíferos marinos Abstract.-The oceanographic conditions that could influence richness and distribution of marine mammal species in the coastal area of the Mexican Central Pacific (MCP) were investigated throughout 2011. Marine mammals observations were obtained from two research platforms. CTD casts were deployed down to 100 m, water samples were taken monthly at six stations for determination of organic nutrients, and another 15 stations were sampled over a wider area only during the winter. High salinity values (34.6), low concentrations of nitrates and nitrites (~3-4 µM), silicates (5-7 µM), Chl-a (~10 mg m -3 ), and low SST (~23.5°C) were detected, as well as the presence of cyclonic gyres near the coast during the winter-spring period. This coincided with high marine mammal species richness in the area (from 5 to 9 species depending on spatial sc...
A limnological survey was conducted in three water bodies from the tropical rain forest region of southeast Veracruz, Mexico, in order to recognize their morphometric characteristics and to define their mixing patterns . These were : a temporary pond, Laguna del Zacatal (A = 7 .64 ha, z,,,. = 13 .0 m) ; and two permanent lakes, Laguna Escondida (A = 18 .26 ha, z,,,, = 32 .5 m) and Lago de Catemaco (A = 7254 ha, z,,,, = 22 .0 m) . Both El Zacatal and La Escondida are warm monomictic, whereas Lago de Catemaco is polymictic . Our results support the hypothesis that most tropical lakes are prone to winter overturn . Dissolved oxygen showed large variation, from almost constant epilimnetic saturation in all three lakes to hypolimetic anoxia in Laguna Escondida . Differences in mixing between lakes are determined by the joint influence of morphometry, rainfall and wind .
