La baie d'Abouabou, à l'image de toute la lagune Ebrié, est victime des actions anthropiques de l'agglomération d'Abidjan. La présente étude vise à connaitre la distribution et la répartition spatiale des métaux et des hydrocarbures dans les sédiments superficiels et leur conséquence sur l'environnement. Les échantillons de sédiments ont été prélevés à la surface du fond de la baie à l'aide d'une benne Van Veen et d'un cône Berthois et traités au laboratoire. Au laboratoire, on a d'abord procédé au séchage, broyage, tamisage et à la digestion des différents échantillons. On a ensuite fait le dosage des éléments traces métalliques et l'analyse chimique des hydrocarbures. Le dosage des métaux lourds s'est fait par spectrophotométrie d'absorption atomique (AAS) et celui du mercure par spectrophotométrie d'absorption atomique en vapeur froide (CVAA). L'analyse des hydrocarbures s'est faite par spectrofluorimétrie à l'aide d'un spectrofluorimètre. Enfin, la qualité environnementale des sédiments a été déterminée en comparant les concentrations des métaux à deux critères établis selon les valeurs guides (Sediment Quality Guide) qui sont le TEC et le PEC. Les principaux métaux rencontrés dans la baie sont le Cd, le Zn, le Fe, le Cu, le Mn et le Hg. On a aussi la présence d'hydrocarbures. L'écart entre les maxima et les minima des différentes teneurs indique une grande disparité dans la répartition des éléments dans les sédiments de la baie. Les teneurs moyennes des différents métaux sont supérieures à l'UCC dans l'ensemble et le taux de pollution varie d'un site à l'autre. De façon générale, les sédiments ne présentent pas d'effets néfastes sur les organismes fouisseurs. Cependant, pour le Hg, les sédiments ont des effets néfastes possibles. Le Zn, le Fe, le Cu, et le Mn sont bien corrélés tandis que le Cd et les hydrocarbures n'ont aucune relation avec les autres. Cela laisse supposer une source de contamination différente pour ces derniers.
