AbstractThe failure of many international cooperation initiatives across Latin America in the field of community-based tourism has ignited questioning within academic circles and development agencies as to their viability. Marketing and revenue setbacks experienced by these initiatives have been an issue of concern, as they often lead to their subsequent abandonment. However, a closer look reveals two marketing methods that put into question this image. On the one hand, numerous community initiatives consolidate and directly market to local middle and lower class tourists. On the other hand, there is a strengthening of intermediary structures that may arise from within these same community initiatives or in partnership with them as a way to market to international tourists. The debate lies upon the strategies that have enabled the consolidation of certain community tourism initiatives and the implications of these forms of commercial cooperation within the sector.
