ResumoO Maranhão é o estado com maior número de comunidades remanescentes de quilombo certificadas do Brasil. Estas comunidades são ricas em conhecimento tradicional, o principal influenciador dos aspectos social e econômico destas comunidades. Visando conhecer tais aspectos e como estes se constituem, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo realizar um diagnóstico socioeconômico da comunidade quilombola Mafra, situada no município de Bequimão, estado do Maranhão. O levantamento das informações foi realizado através da pesquisa etnográfica, com aplicação de 22 questionários do tipo semiestruturado, conversas formais, entrevistas e observação não participativa. Dos entrevistados, 50% eram mulheres e 50% homens com média de 44 anos, sendo a maioria naturais do próprio município de Bequimão. Os dados socioeconômicos revelam que, de modo geral, a população quilombola desta comunidade começou a trabalhar muito cedo, ajudando os pais nas atividades da lavoura, o que contribuiu para a baixa escolarização entre os entrevistados, uma vez que estes não tiveram oportunidade de priorizar os estudos. É uma comunidade que vive quase que exclusivamente da agricultura, atividade que promove a alimentação, serve como principal fonte de renda da família e, em alguns casos, como complementação de renda. Dentre as atividades desenvolvidas na comunidade, destacam-se a criação de pequenos animais, o cultivo de pequenas hortaliças, grandes culturas e algumas frutíferas, bem como o extrativismo e a captura de organismos dos manguezais presentes na região. No geral, essas atividades são voltadas para o consumo da família e, em alguns casos, quando há excedente, este é comercializado no centro de Bequimão e na própria comunidade.
