O RELATIVISMO COMO POSIÇÃO FILOSÓFICAAdmite-se que a teoria do relativismo cultural, útil ao trabalho nas ciências sociais aplicadas, é posição controvertida (LITTRÉ apud LALANDE 13 ). De fato, o relativismo como posição filosófica é foco de uma polêmica histórica do pensamento. A filosofia, desde a antiguidade grega até os nossos dias, ocupa-se com dois grandes temas que necessitam de uma tomada de posição: o problema do conhecimento e o problema da ação ou prática. Em fins do séc. XVIII, KANT 10 resume os propósitos da reflexão filosófica nas perguntas: "o que posso saber, o que devo fazer, o que posso esperar". É dentro da problemática da ação prática com a pergunta "o que devo fazer", que se colocam as ciências humanas, e entre elas as ciên-cias sociais aplicadas.A problemática da ação humana, especificamente a sua validade, tem sido encarada de acôrdo com diferentes pontos de vista ou posições no pensamento refletivo. Três destas posições são: o dogmatismo, o ceticismo, e o relativismo (HESSEN 8 ). Entende-se por dogmático (dogma = doutrina fixada) a posição filosófica para a qual não existe o problema dos valores que orientam a ação. Para o dogmatismo, os valores existem, pura e simplesmente, e têm caráter absoluto. O fato de que todos os valores pressupõem uma consciência valorizante, é desconsiderado pelo dogmático. O dogmatismo passa por cima do sujeito e de todos os seus determinantes como sociedade, época histórica e características culturais.O dogmatismo se converte, muitas vê-zes, em seu oposto, o ceticismo.
