This review paper deals with the iontophoresis technique and its main uses as well as some of the researches carried out with this technique for the different drugs delivery. Therefore, the research bases PubMed and Scielo were used to search publications in this regard in the last 17 years. Although it was first described about 300 years ago, iontophoresis is a technique rarely used in physiotherapy. Some successful uses have been described in the literature. Among these therapeutic successes may be mentioned iontophoresis in the treatment of the condition known as palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis. However, there is no general consensus about its use among researchers. Thus, the use of electric current for drug application is restricted to a few situations in physiotherapy. This article points out the need for more research since the technique presents as promising for the transdermal application of several drugs with lower risk of errors due to high dosages or systemic side effects. Keywords: Iontophoresis. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
