Esta revisão tem por objetivo atrair a atenção para a importância de estudos colaborativos das bases biológicas da dor e sua relação à clínica psiquiátrica veterinária. Durante todo o período de vida, os animais defrontam-se com situações desafiadoras e estressantes que são capazes de desencadear respostas neuroendócrinas complexas, levando a ajustes no comportamento e na fisiologia, a fim de maximizar a probabilidade de sobrevivência. A dor pode alterar a funcionalidade cerebral, modificando estratégias de enfrentamento do indivíduo e influenciar na qualidade de vida. O conhecimento acerca da neuroanatomia, neurofisiologia e do conceito de bem-estar animal pode renovar a atenção para esse sistema complexo, e promover uma possível estratégia para o tratamento de condições dolorosas.

Estudos das emoções associadas ao bem-estar animal estão em ascensão e tem sido objeto de interesse em particular de estudiosos da etologia. A revisão aqui apresentada tem objetivou selecionar os principais estudos que focam nas motivações internas dos animais e que determinam suas escolhas realizadas. Altruísmo e cooperação entre animais, são questões fundamentais sobre as origens evolutivas, e relações sociais. Agressividade, dentre os comportamentos aversivos, é regulada por interações sociais negativas, e positivas. Os animais apresentam esses citados comportamentos e são motivados por fatores externos e internos e, por fim, a empatia não é uma exclusividade dos humanos.
Evidências recentes apontam que animais podem sofrer de transtornos mentais. Fatores como abandono, restrição da liberdade, estresse, trauma e abuso podem predispor ao aparecimento de doenças mentais nos indivíduos, tais como: depressão, transtorno do estresse pós-trauma, ansiedade e transtornos compulsivos. Na medicina veterinária esses transtornos são subdiagnosticados. Consequentemente, os animais vítimas de maus-tratos e traumas não recebem os cuidados médicos necessários e sofrem de distúrbios psicológicos extremos e debilitantes e simplesmente morrem em decorrência da carga alostática. Além disso, o agressor não tem uma pena compatível com o dano causado. A revisão é uma contribuição para o avanço dos estudos a respeito do reconhecimento e identificação dos transtornos psiquiátricos dos animais, e seu conteúdo se presta como alerta e encorajamento para os profissionais que atuam na melhoria do bem-estar animal.

O conhecimento acerca do conceito de bem-estar animal pode renovar a atenção para o complexo estudo das emoções felinas e promover uma possível estratégia para a prevenção dessa condição psiconeuroendócrina.
