Umbu fruits from four municipalities of Paraíba were morphologically characterized in order to identify promising genotypes for fresh consumption and agro-industrial use. We used 400 fruits from parent plants located in São Vicente do Seridó, Queimadas, Boqueirão, and Cabaceiras and 40 commercial fruits from two open fairs in Campina Grande, PB. The experimental unit consisted of ten fruits. The fruits were analyzed for total mass (MTF), length (LC), diameter (DF), fresh matter (MMF), yield (RF), and presence of hairs. In the endocarps, mass (ME), length (CE), diameter (DE), and width (LE) were the evaluated parameters. A completely randomized design was adopted, the data were subjected to variance analysis, and the means were compared by the Tukey test and principal component analysis. The fruits from Queimadas and São Vicente do Seridó showed the best morphological characters with regard to mass, length, diameter, fresh matter, and fruit yield, and were the most promising for agro-industrial commercialization. The fruits from Boqueirão showed the highest endocarp mass. Most fruits showed hairs on the peel, except the commercial ones. Four groups of municipalities were formed, with the fruits from Queimadas showing the largest size, while the fruits from São Vicente de Seridó and Soledade showed the highest yield.
Palavras-chave: Bioinvasora, química do solo, salinidade, fertilidade Chemical changes in Caatinga soils under cultivation of Cryptostegia madagascariensisAbstract The species Cryptostegia madagascariensis Bojer ex Decne occurs in wet and arid areas, found dispersed in several regions of the planet, where it is used mainly for ornamental purposes. In determining environments, such as the Caatinga and associated ecosystems of the Brazilian Northeast, the species has been standing out as an invasive plant. Thus, an experiment was carried out in a screened shelter with the objective to evaluate the chemical characteristics of grounds under cultivation of young plants of C. madagascariensis being subjected to different levels of salinity and, humidity. Initially, two soils were used, one Fluvic Neosol and a Vertisol that were irrigated with saline water (0.3; 1.0; 2.0 and 4.0 dSm-1), being subjected to four levels of humidity (20% of CC, 40% of CC, 70% of CC and Crowded). The soils were placed in pots with a capacity of 21 liters, where each pot contained 19 kg of soil and four plants of C. madagascariensis with treatments arranged in randomized blocks with four replications. After 152 days after sowing, soil samples were taken to analyze the chemical attributes of the soil. Soil samples were analyzed to determine soil electrical conductivity, pH, N and K contents. The increase in water salinity and moisture levels until saturation increased the salinity of both soils. With the results it was observed of that the analyzes of the chemical composition of the two types of soil at the end of the experimente showed a decrease in their values of both fertility and salinity when compared with the analyzes at the beginning of the experiment, there was an increase in pH and potential acidity. Keywords: Bioinvasive; soil chemistry; soil salinity; fertility.
N deficiency is one of the significant causes of tropical pasture degradation, and including legumes may be a sustainable strategy to prevent pasture degradation in tropical environments. The objective of this study was to investigate the use of forage peanut (Arachis pintoi), butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea), calopo (Calopogonium mucunoides) and stylosanthes (Stylosanthes sp.) intercropped with signal grass to determine soil biomass and microorganismal activity in a tropical subhumid zone. Soil sampling was performed at the legume rows and, three meters away from them and in the soil of pastures with single signal grass with or without an application of N-fertilizer, two years after legume implantation and during the dry and rainy seasons. The estimate of carbon and nitrogen of microbial biomass, C-CO2 emission, and soil metabolic quotient of each legume were compared between the dry and rainy seasons, at two distances and with both single signal grass treatments. Although the rainy season decreased soil basal respiration in all treatments, forage peanut (~332 mg kg -1 ), and butterfly pea (~280 mg kg -1 ) showed pronounced soil microorganismal biomass, surpassing 27% and 14% the estimate for single signal grass not fertilized, respectively. The soil microorganisms with forage peanuts and stylosanthes also emitted more C-CO2 (~1.0 mg kg −1 h −1 ) in the dry season, indicating an effective microorganismal activity in these soils, mainly due to the absence of disturbances, as noted in the low metabolic quotients in both climatic seasons (less than 1%).
