La medicina como ciencia se divide en especialidades, cada una de estas se convierten a su vez en un campo de estudio en sí, al mismo tiempo que atienden enfermedades y aflicciones referidas a la especialidad. En este sentido la medicina crítica, también denominada medicina intensivista; se refiere a la especialidad médica encargada de atender a pacientes cuya aflicción implique que su vida esté en riesgo y al mismo tiempo puedan ser recuperables. La medicina crítica se ha convertido en una de las especialidades más importante de la ciencia de la salud, debido al objetivo bajo el que se establece, el cual es la estabilización de los pacientes cuyo estado de salud amenace potencialmente su vida y sean susceptibles a recuperación. El texto que se presenta a continuación sustentado en una investigación bibliográfica, podría valorarse como una guía o herramienta, destinada fundamentalmente al personal de enfermería que ofrece atención profesional a pacientes de extrema gravedad bajo una característica particular al observar de forma constante su evolución, pues expone un bagaje de información relacionada con los cuidados y procedimientos relacionados con la medicina crítica.
La rehidratación es la terapia o el procedimiento mediante el cual se atribuyen nuevamente al cuerpo los electrolitos perdidos en la deshidratación. La metodología utilizada para el presente trabajo de investigación, se enmarca dentro de una revisión bibliográfica de tipo documental. La técnica para la recolección de datos está constituida por materiales electrónicos, estos últimos como Google Académico, entre otros, apoyándose para ello en el uso de descriptores certificados y avalados por el tesauro de la UNESCO. La información aquí obtenida será revisada, resumida y analizada para su exposición organizada en los resultados. La pregunta planteada dentro de esta investigación, va a depender de la gravedad de la patología que se presente, ya que las rehidrataciones de líquidos están asociadas a deshidratación y gastroenteritis, sin embargo, tanto la rehabilitación oral como intravenosa puede utilizarse de forma alternada. La rehidratación oral generalmente es usada para casos de deshidratación leve y moderada, en casos graves como deshidratación de moderada a grave se procede a utilizar la rehidratación rápida (el objetivo es restaurar lo más rápidamente posible la normalidad fisiológica en el niño y, de forma secundaria, disminuir el tiempo de estancia en el servicio de urgencias y la tasa de ingresos en el hospital) más que la rehidratación intravenosa convencional, ya que esta última en base a guías internacionales puede estar sujeta a errores de cálculo acordes a la fisiopatología del equilibrio hidroelectrolítico y con las que debía transcurrir un tiempo prolongado hasta que los niños recuperaban la normalidad, en este contexto la rehidratación oral es tan eficaz como la rehidratación por vía intravenosa, sin embargo a pesar de esto la recomendación principal como vía de acción terapéutica.
