PURPOSEGlobal education experiences for healthcare professionals during formal training improve cultural sensitivity and foster a desire to improve global disparities. COVID-19 virus disruption to these global education experiences may affect future healthcare provider aspirations. In a time when a pandemic is exposing healthcare inequities, the skills future medical providers can attain during an international education experience become indispensable. This investigation explored the effect of COVID-19 on healthcare professions students at one private university who had expressed interest in a global health learning experience.
METHODSInstitutional review board approval was obtained through the university to conduct an anonymous survey designed to explore the graduate healthcare professions student experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. A mixedmethod design was used with a survey asking yes/no questions allowing intentional comparisons between physician assistant (PA), physical therapy, and occupational therapy programs, as well as open-ended questions that were coded for themes. The survey was distributed electronically to 424 healthcare professions students in the division of PA studies, physical therapy, and occupational therapy students.
