This paper aims to present a set of principles for the design of critically grounded activities for English classes in regular school settings. Such principles are based on the pillars of critical literacy according to renowned linguists and scholars of the area, as well as pre-established criteria proposed by Richards (2001) and adapted by Rashidi (2011) for critical-pedagogical practice. A brief contextualization will be presented, as well as theoretical foundations for the organization of such criteria. Following this moment, two practical examples, based on the Brazilian context, will be presented in order to demonstrate the applicability of these theories in language classes at regular schools. The directions hereby proposed are aimed at guiding ELT teachers’ reflections as they try to implement critically based activities in their classrooms.

ABSTRACT -Nowadays, studies relating Critical Literacy (CL) toEnglish Language Teaching (ELT) in regular schools have become more and more frequent in the field of Applied Linguistics. Such studies have shown how theories regarding CL focus on providing students with opportunities for autonomy, social engagement and citizenship in English classes at regular schools. Considering Bill 6954 from 2013 -or "Bill Romário" -, which requests the study of the Federal Constitution (FC) in local classrooms around the country, this paper aims at proposing activities based on CL theories which involve the study of the FC in English classes at regular schools. Three activities based on CL aimed at high school students will be proposed, using the FC as their background. We hope that the present study will contribute significantly to foster reflections on possibilities for the study of the FC within the context of basic education in Brazil in a global way. Keywords: critical literacy, ELT in regular schools, Bill 6954 from 2013.
