Recruitment of European eels (Anguilla anguilla) has declined to the extent that they have been added to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Therefore, it is critical to ensure that eels complete their outward river migration in order to contribute to the available spawning stock. We conducted a 4-year (2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011) telemetry study to understand the migratory behaviour and potential impact of environmental factors on the eel during this critical life stage.Out of 399 female eels tagged with acoustic transmitters, only 28% demonstrated clear downstream migratory behaviour. Fifty-five percent were detected exhibiting no downstream migration behaviour and 17% were not detected at any monitoring station. Movement patterns of downstream-migrating (silver) eels were characterized by nocturnal activity and seasonal migration, with distinct peaks in autumn and spring. Migration was often discontinuous and exhibited phases of active locomotion and expanded stopovers. The most important determinants of movement activity were water temperature, cumulative precipitation and moonlight, although the significance varied by season and location in the river basin.Our results evidence a discontinuous, stepwise migration over an extended period. Furthermore, our findings indicate that migration success depends on holding duration prior to tagging and environmental predictors with varying importance depending on the season, as well as the locations of capture, tagging and release.
Summary From the years 1997 to 2000, fish assemblages from 15 groyne fields and training walls (a current guiding dyke, protecting the groyne field) of the Middle Elbe River (Germany) were examined by electrofishing. The aim of the study was to detect abiotic environmental key variables which determine preadult and adult fish assemblage in typical riverbank structures using multivariate ordination techniques (canonical correspondence analysis) and univariate methods (logistic regression analysis). Habitat preferences of preadult and adult stages of selected fish species were also estimated. Fish sampling was carried out at 190 river stretches; a further 1615 samples were taken by the point‐abundance sampling method. In total, 21 732 preadult and adult individuals belonging to 30 fish species were caught; perch, eel, ide, roach, chub, gudgeon, bleak and white bream were the most frequent. Eurytopic species clearly dominated the fish assemblage with 72% total abundance, followed by rheophilic species (26%). Limnophilic fish species (rudd, crucian carp, stickleback and tench) were relatively rare (2% of total abundance), with frequencies of occurrence between 1 and 10%. The highest species diversities were estimated in structurally diverse training walls and groyne fields with defective groynes, whereas low species diversity was found to occur in poorly structured, strongly silted groyne fields with intact groynes. Additionally, typical seasonal and annual changes of the fish assemblage were observed. From the mesoscalic point of view, the structure of the preadult and adult fish assemblage was affected by both spatial (type of groyne field, river stretch) and temporal factors (year, season). Regarding the microhabitat, hydromorphological parameters (slope, current velocity, water level, predominant and secondary substrate) followed by physicochemical water values [dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature and pH‐value] are of significance for the structure of the fish community. Furthermore, hiding places (shelter) are of subordinate but significant importance for the fish assemblage in the poorly structured main channel of the Elbe River. Importance of hydromorphological factors on the microhabitat scale was confirmed by multiple logistic regression in 12 of 14 preference models, conducted for different ontogenetic stages of roach, bream, white bream, bleak, ide, chub, gudgeon, asp, perch and eel. Habitat preferences of adult bleak and preadult roach were first determined by physicochemical water values and seasonal influences. Univariate models were generated to describe specific habitat preferences of different species and age‐stages regarding the most important environmental variables (depth, velocity, predominant substrate, slope and shelter). By using acoustic telemetry, the behaviour and fishery mortality of silver eels Anguilla anguilla (L.) were studied during the early phase of the spawning migration through the Havel River downstream to the river Elbe. A total of 99 female silver eels were implanted with acoustic transmitters and released at two locations in the Havel River system in autumn 2007. Tag recaptures by fisheries were used to assess fishery mortality. Most eels continued their downstream migration immediately after release during October–November in the year of release. However, some eels continued their downstream migration the following spring or autumn; only a few eels migrated in winter and summer. Tagged eels reached the river Elbe from 2 days to more than 1 year after tagging. Fishing efficiency was very high, and by the end of December 2008, only 8% of the tagged eels had reached the river Elbe, whereas 25% were reported caught by commercial fishers and 2% by recreational fishers. Under the European Eel Regulation EG 1100/2007, Member States exhibiting natural habitats for the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) on their territory are obliged to prepare Eel Management Plans (EMP) containing appropriate measures to safeguard the escapement of a river system specific silver eel target biomass. Stocking is one management option to reach this target. We used various methodical approaches to study population parameters in a large lowland river under the application of a multi-annual intense stocking programme. The approaches were used to further enhance modelling of stock dynamics and silver eel escapement, in particular. Parameterizing the German Eel Model III (GEM III) with values and functions obtained for recruitment, growth, and mortality resulted in an annual escapement estimate of roughly 32 000–64 000 silver eels from 2010 to 2012. Escapement estimates based on a mark-recapture study conducted in parallel revealed somewhat lower values (11 000–25 000) for the same years. In view of the small number of natural recruits, such values are only contingent if stocking had a profound effect on silver eel production. Results from modelling annual silver eel escapement values indicate that escapement targets set in the EMP for this tributary cannot be reached without stocking. This constellation is likely to apply to other Eel Management Units with low current natural immigration values as well, and might be considered a key dilemma in eel management in such catchments due to the current confusion whether translocation of recruits yields a net benefit to the panmictic stock of the European eel.
