The objectives of this study were to verify whether propolis and ascorbic acid have an effect on plasmatic membrane integrity of goat spermatozoa and investigate the potential of these antioxidants in the use of goats spermatozoa cryopreservation extenders. Five adult boars were used of the Alpine (n = 2) and Saanen (n = 3) breeds. After semen collection, the evaluation consisted of the physical and morphological exam, live and dead cells (supravital test) and hyposmotic swelling test. Afterwards, the fresh semen was diluted with the Bioxcell® extender (control); Bioxcell® + 0.25% freeze dried propolis extract); Bioxcell® + 0.5% freeze dried propolis extract); Bioxcell® + 0.05% ascorbic acid) or Bioxcell® + 0.25% ascorbic acid). After final dilutions, the sperm motility and vigor were assessed obtained in each extender, and then the semen was sealed, cooled and frozen. In fresh semen, the physical and morphological aspects and the results of the supravital test and hyposmotic swelling test did not differ between animals or breeds. The gener...
Palavras-chave: clima tropical, maturidade sexual, puberdade, regime extensivo, Simental Puberty and sexual maturity in young Simmental bulls, raised under pasture conditions in a tropical climateABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to determine the age at puberty and sexual maturity and its relationship with body weight and testicular measurements in Simmental young bulls raised under pasture conditions in a tropical climate.Forty-four young bulls at 1 to 30 months of age were used. Body and testicular measurements were made monthly and ejaculates collected fortnightly, from six months of age by using the method of electroejaculation. Age at puberty was 13.42 ± 3.02 months and sexual maturity was observed at 21.43 ± 6.6 months of age, with body weight and scrotal circumference of 324.2 ± 23.7 kg and 26.90 ± 1.41 cm for puberty and 360 ± 69.04 kg and 34.88 ± 3.9 cm to sexual maturity, respectively. This study found late age to the timing of reproductive events, with direct relation to the type of management adopted.
This study analyzed the adenosine concentration on quality of ram semen in different refrigerated storage times at 5 °C. The design was in blocks with repeatedmeasures factorial design. Five levels of adenosine and four refrigeration times were considered as fixed effects and the animal as random effect (block). Ram semen was diluted with Andromed ® diluent (control) and increasing adenosine levels (0.5, 0.75, 1, and 1.5%). The samples were taken from refrigeration after 4, 8, 12, and 16 h and evaluated for progressive rectilinear sperm motility, sperm vigor, and membrane integrity (supravital test). Data were subjected to analysis of variance with Tukey's test. The regression analysis was conducted to evaluate behavior of adenosine levels. Factor interaction for rectilinear progressive motile variable was verified. There was a quadratic effect of progressive rectilinear motility in function of adenosine levels for each cooled storage time studied, with recommended maximum adenosine concentration of 0.81 and 1.04% at 4 and 8 h, respectively. Adenosine also promoted a protective effect on the membrane integrity. Adenosine added to the diluent increases sperm motility and vigor and protects the sperm membrane integrity.
