Resumo: Neste artigo abordaremos, por um lado, o processo de humanização dos pets, mostrando que está em curso, em diversos níveis, uma maior aproximação dos seres humanos aos seus animais de estimação, movidos por uma "paixão animalitária" e gratificados pelo "amor incondicional" recebido de seus animais de estimação. A "família multiespecífica", o médico veterinário dessa família e o mercado pet apontam para uma nova configuração em relação ao tratamento desses animais. Por outro lado, como contraponto, traremos os casos em que, para além do cuidado e do investimento, há o descarte e o abandono, o que envolve grupos engajados numa "ajuda animalitária", dispostos a resgatar e prestar auxílio a estes animais necessitados.
