A general introduction to the health hazards of breathing silica dust and procedures for and results of a trial sampling of airborne silica dust levels in the railway tunnel constructed for the Disney Rail Link, the Tai Yam Teng Tunnel in Hong Kong are described. Published results for Norwegian tunnels, the Channel Tunnel and concrete drilling, sawing and grinding in USA are presented for comparison. Following a brief description of the operations of the Hong Kong Pneumoconiosis Compensation Fund, conclusions are drawn concerning the extent of measures required to control airborne silica dust and its inhalation in tunnelling and general construction.
