Duvin, Orta Çağ’da Güney Kafkasya’nın en önemli kentlerinden biriydi. Şehir uzun yıllar Ermeni, Sâsânî ve Müslüman idarecilerine merkezlik yapmıştı. Oldukça stratejik bir konuma sahip olan şehir, farklı milletten pek çok insanın yaşadığı kozmopolit bir yerdi. Duvin, Doğu-Batı arasında uzanan İpek Yolu’nun Kafkasya’daki en önemli güzergâhlarından birisiydi. Şehirden kuzeyde bulunan ülkelere ve güneydeki İslam memleketlerine doğru giden ticaret yolları da geçmekteydi. Burası bu dönemde ayrıca önemli ürünlerin üretilip ihraç edildiği bir merkezdi. Duvin’deki pazarlarda tüccarların dışarıdan getirdikleri mallardan başka yerli üretim mallar da satılmaktaydı. Şehirde çanak çömlek, cam, şarapçılık, balıkçılık ve metal işleme gibi sanayi kolları var olsa da en önemli sanayi kolu tekstil sanayi idi. Burada dokunan halı, kilim ve kumaşlar dünyaca meşhurdu ve oldukça rağbet görmekteydi. Bu kumaşların özelliği Kırmız denilen bir boya ile boyanmaları ve oldukça dayanıklı olmalarıdır. Duvin’de bir darphane ve sürekli para basma geleneği de vardı. Sikkeler bu dönemde şehrin ticari yaşamının canlılığına dair önemli ipuçları vermektedirler. Bu makale ile Duvin’in ticari ve ekonomik geçmişi hakkında genel bir bilgi verecek, şehrin ticari ürünlerinin ve ihraç mallarının neler olduğunu ortaya koyacak ve en sonunda da buradan geçen ticaret yolları ile güzergâhlarını ifade ederek, Duvin’in Orta Çağ ticaretindeki yerine ilişkin genel bir çerçeve çizmeye çalışacağız.
