ÖzTarihsel açıdan bakıldığında, bir beĢeri bilim disiplini olarak psikoloji, din çalıĢmalarını ve dinin insan davranıĢı ve düĢünce süreçlerine olan etkisini ihmal etmiĢtir. Bu çalıĢma kısaca psikolojinin "dini" niçin çalıĢma konusu edinmesi gerektiğini tartıĢmakta ve psikolog ve din adamlarının birbirlerine karĢı tutumlarını incelemektedir. Bu makalede din ve insan uyumu arasında güçlü bir iliĢki olduğunu gösteren deneysel çalıĢmalara yer verilmiĢtir. Ayrıca bu iki disiplin arasında son zamanlarda meydana gelen geliĢmeler hakkında yazılan literatür tanıtılmıĢtır. Tarih boyunca var olan bu iki disiplin arasındaki düĢmanlığa rağmen, gittikçe elveriĢli hale gelen bir ortak alanın olduğu ve gelecekte de belli Ģartlar dahilinde bu yönelimin daha da güçlenebileceği sonucuna varılmıĢtır. Giriş:Birçok insanın yaĢamında din hayati bir öneme sahip olmasına rağmen, dinî inançlar günümüz psikoloji disiplini içerisinde belki de en az dikkat çekilen konular arasındadır. Sosyal bilimler arasında psikoloji, dinî inançları öylesine yoğun tarzda çürüten bir imaj geliĢtirmiĢtir ki bu tutum psikolog ve psikanalistlerin "Tanrısız bir yüzyılın papazları" olarak adlandırılmalarına neden olmuĢtur. Fakat dinin akademik çevrelerin yanı sıra profesyonel çevrelerde de giderek daha fazla tartıĢılmasıyla bu durum tersine dönmeye baĢlamıĢtır (Hefner,1997: 144).Psikoloji ve dinin ortak bir alanda buluĢması yeni değildir. Sosyal bilimler tarihinde bu iki disiplin iç içe geçmiĢ yakın bir iliĢkiye sahiptir. Psikoloji terimi "ruh" anlamına gelen psyche kökünden türetilmiĢtir.
