In this paper, the radial basis function neural network‐based model reference adaptive speed control for vector controlled induction motor drive system is presented. The speed control of induction motors is challenging because of their complex mathematical model, non‐linear structure, and time varying dynamics. The radial basis function neural network is used to compensate the non‐linearity which comes from the non‐linear state equations of induction motor model. Neural network parameters are online updated via gradient descent algorithm to minimize the error. The drive system has been tested under various operating conditions. This paper demonstrated benefits of the proposed control approach by comparing the algorithm to conventional PI controllers. The results show that the proposed controller ensures good robustness and stable operation of the system under variable speed and variable loads than the PI controller.
Original scientific paperThis paper proposes a model reference adaptive speed controller based on artificial neural network for induction motor drives. The performance of traditional feedback controllers has been insufficient in speed control of induction motors due to nonlinear structure of the system, changing environmental conditions, and disturbance input effects. A successful speed control of induction motor requires a nonlinear control system. On the other hand, in recent years, it has been demonstrated that artificial intelligence based control methods were much more successful in the nonlinear system control applications. In this work, it has been developed an intelligent controller for induction motor speed control with combination of radial basis function type neural network (RBF) and model reference adaptive control (MRAC) strategy. RBF is utilized to adaptively compensate the unknown nonlinearity in the control system. The indirect field-oriented control (IFOC) technique and space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) methods which are widespread used in high performance induction motor drives has been preferred for drive method. In order to demonstrate the reliability of the control technique, the proposed adaptive controller has been tested under different operating conditions and compared performance of conventional PI controller. The results show that the proposed controller has got a clear superiority to the conventional linear controllers.Key words: Induction motor, neural network, model reference adaptive control, vector control.Učinkovito upravljanje brzinom induktivnog motora korištenjem metode adaptivnog upravljanja s referentnim modelom zasnovane na RBF-u.
AbstractIn the speed control of induction motors, an acceptable good performance cannot be obtained by using traditional feedback controllers due to the non-linear structure of the system, the effects of changing environmental conditions and several disturbance inputs. On the other hand, in recent years, it has been demonstrated that artificial intelligence based control methods were much more successful in the nonlinear system control applications. In this study, an intelligent controller has been developed for speed control of induction motors by using radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) and model reference adaptive control (MRAC) strategy. In the driving of induction motor, indirect field oriented vector control method which is widely used in high-performance drive system has been preferred. Simulation results to determine the success of the development of this control method was compared with conventional PI type controller. While the motor is under the fan-type load, the performance of controller has been investigated in Matlab/Simulink environment. The simulation results demonstrate that the performance of RBFNN based MRAC controller is better than that of conventional PI controller.
The increasing need for energy requires using existing energy sources more efficiently. Because it is the active power that supplies useful power for industrial facilities, reactive power must be minimized, and supplied by another source instead of electrical grid. Therefore, reactive power supplied by the grid can be reduced via by correcting power factor of the grid. In electrical power systems, power factor correction is called reactive power compensation. Generating reactive power during excessive excitation, synchronous motors are used as dynamic compensators in power systems. Synchronous motors are more cost-effective for industrial facilities when they are used to generate mechanic power and compensate reactive power, which increases the efficiency of industrial facilities. There are various studies focusing on the efficiency, capacity and stability of the power system via reactive power compensation in the literature. In today's world, there are numerous optimization techniques inspired by biological systems. One of these techniques is Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) inspired by the movements of swarms of birds. This study focuses on the reactive power compensation of a power system by controlling the excitation current of a synchronous motor via PSO based PID and Ziegler Nichols (Z-N) based PID controllers.
AbstractAlmost none of the systems is not linear in real life. Fuzzy logic control has emerged as an alternative approach with non-linear methods. Non-linear characteristics of the systems are represented by membership functions, fuzzy rule base and fuzzy inference process. The systems that contain non-stationary, energy storage elements and system parameters that vary depending on the state variable are non-linear dynamic systems. Control applications of dynamic systems are difficult to realize because dynamic systems have usually non-linear structure. Fuzzy logic based controllers that have the ability with non-linear conversion capabilities are successful control applications of such systems. The performance of this controller can be increased by treating the method used at the design stage. In this study, fuzzy logic based controller that is improved nonlinear model of dc servo motor for speed control by using different fuzzy membership functions will be investigated on the system performance.
