Governmental web sites, a virtual esplanade AbstractWeb sites of Brazilian federal government were analysed and evaluated, particularly the sites of the ministries that are part of the Information Society Programme. A checklist based on ergonomic principles was established. Evaluative criteria were clustered into four large main headings: scope and purpose; content; graphics and multimedia design; workability. It points out that the governamental agencies should improve their web sites aimed at a better adequacy to ergonomic standards.
