The potential of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as platforms for the development of heterogeneous single-site catalysts is reviewed thoroughly.

A new MIL-101 material based on aluminum and containing amine functional groups has been synthesized. The pure phase NH2-MIL-101(Al) can only be formed in very specific synthesis conditions, where both the metal source and the solvent used play a key role. The resulting porous solid shows a high thermal and chemical stability, decomposing at temperatures above 650 K in air. The NH2-MIL-101(Al) framework offers an excellent trade off for separation of CO2: the combination of high stability, acceptable capacity at low adsorbate partial pressures, high selectivity, and fast regenerability makes this new material a very attractive candidate for applications like natural gas or biogas upgrading. CO2 capacities up to 62 wt % are obtained at room temperature and 3 MPa. In addition to an excellent separation performance, the NH2-MIL-101(Al) shows a high activity in the basic catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation of benzaldehyde with ethyl cyanoacetate at 313 K even in an as apolar a solvent as toluene (turn over frequency, TOF = 1.8 h–1).

Although the photocatalytic water splitting was the rst photocatalytic reaction to be discovered, no photocatalytic systems for this reaction have been industrially applied. This is both due to the fact that most discovered catalysts rely on the use of noble metals and to the low activities achieved so far by alternative catalysts. The application in this eld of materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be a game changer in this research eld. MOFs have been proven to be photoactive and their optical properties can be easily tuned towards visible light operation. The current challenge lies in the development of more appropriate active sites for the desired photocatalytic cycle. In this manuscript, we report a new strategy to achieve this goal. By introducing a derivative of the well-known molecular Co-based electrocatalyst Co-dioxime-diimine into the pores of a photo-active NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) following a 'Ship-in-a-bottle' strategy, we were able to synthesize a highly active photocatalyst composite free of noble metals, and fully recyclable. The effect of a post-synthetic acid treatment on the catalytic performance of MOFs is evaluated for MIL-100(Fe), an iron-benzenetricarboxylate. The acid-treated frameworks are structurally robust as no differences have been found in XRD patterns after treatment. Porosity of the acid-treated MOFs gradually decreases, most probably as a consequence of anions remaining in the charged frameworks. Monitoring the modification of the MOFs by reactions of which the outcome depends on the acid properties of the catalyst suggests the presence of two types of active sites, with weak Br€ onsted acid sites in close vicinity to the Lewis acid open metal sites. This is supported by CO-chemisorption experiments which indicate a large increase of both Lewis and Br€ onsted acidity. In Diels-Alder reactions of oxygenated dienophiles with 1,3-cyclohexadiene, a strong increase of the activity is found for the acid-treated MOFs. This is explained by the enhanced activation of the dienophiles on the modified active sites.

The formation of methane hydrates on MOFs has been identified for the first time using inelastic neutron scattering and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction.

The gate-opening phenomenon in ZIFs is of paramount importance to understand their behavior in industrial molecular separations. Here we show for the first time using in situ inelastic neutron scattering (INS) the swinging of the -CH3 groups and the imidazolate linkers in the prototypical ZIF-8 and ZIF-8@AC hybrid materials upon exposure to mild N2 pressure.
