As the wave of sustainability is sweeping across the major countries and cities of the world, the effect of the inevitable change is finding its way through to the health sector as well. Since the main functions of the hospital include healing the patient, it aims to provide adequate health services to people. Hospitals managers should strive to realize facilities that meet a certain level of demand. This study aims to present the interior environmental quality (IEQ) of bedrooms in Jordanian hospitals and propose a solution to improve indoor environment quality using sustainable design principles. A qualitative research methodology is used in this study. A comparative analysis is made between the original set up of the hospital buildings and the present conditions in which they are in. During the research, it was found that the design to be applied for a hospital should be following the healing environmental characteristics. Besides, the design of hospitals should be made with the climatic conditions of the area in mind. In the advanced countries of the world, hospitals are generally built with extensive research and important factors such as temperature, wind direction and humidity are taken into consideration. The design for a hospital building should be assessed according to the German Green Building Assessment (DGNB) criteria. It has been found that the one-bedroom is ideal for patients because it provides the necessary privacy and also greatly reduces the spread of the disease. In hygienic practices, there should be a first-class healing environment with evidence-based medical research. It was concluded that the practices involving the use of sustainable designs can be followed with the hints received from hospitals in the advanced countries of the world. The reason behind this article is the idea that “Expandable Hospital Competitions” are significant architectural events due to their organization in two different countries. Additionally, the research topic becomes much important due to the differences in “Hospital Design Standards” arising from the lapse of time as almost half a century since such competitions are organized at different times. The first competition, called “Expandable Hospital,” is organized in Turkey in the year 1975, while the second competition is named “Small Hospital-Big Idea,” which was organized in the USA in the year 2011. Due to such a year gap, the research becomes more multi-dimensional, with significant differences in the competition space programs. At the same time, there have been some improvements socially, general health conditions due to the changes in welfare and communication conditions, etc., hospital organization, medical practices, pharmaceutical manufacturing, medical devices, and medical equipment. All of such factors have changed the space standards that affect the hospital organization in the long year gap. Based on such developments, this study aims to identify the differences between hospital competitions and space programs under the existing conditions through the performance of comparison
The design and construction of healthcare facilities are some of the significant foundations for the survival and healthy living of a happy society. In terms of the sustainable quality aspect in healthcare facilities, the structural safety and functional efficiency were primarily analyzed. In the further development, it turned into the healing healthcare centers together with the inclusion of aesthetic and cultural values as well as psychological and physical needs of individuals. With such developments, the concept of psychosocially supporting design has come into prominence through improving as a connection to nature, social support enhancement, stimulating design features, complexity, and coherence factors. Our article analyses the subject based on the indoor space planning elements for user’s psychological positive experience upon defining the factors with their spatial characteristics in consideration with the study regarding a conceptual model of the supportive healing environment. A hospital project, which is in the pre-design phase and still under development in the Near East University, was analyzed as the case study under this study.
