The purpose of this research is to find out the deconstruction of Peter Pan’s character in Kitsis’ and Horowitz’s work as described in Barrie’s Peter Pan. Kitsis’ and Horowitz’s Once Upon a Time, Season Three is the first film that deconstructs the character of Peter Pan from Barrie’s Peter Pan. The qualitative method is used in analyzing the main data that are taken from both works, Barrie’s Peter Pan and Kitsis’ and Horowitz’s Once Upon a Time, Season Three. The data analysis starts by selecting the data from re-watching and re-reading the works. Then analyzing them using the theory of deconstruction, character and characterization and cinematography. The theory is used to find the binary opposition and analyzing the characteristics of Peter Pan in both works. The cinematography is also needed to support the analysis and strengthens the argument of the analysis from the character’s deconstruction. The result of the analysis shows that the characteristic of Peter Pan in Barrie’s Peter Pan is deconstructed from hero into villain. It shows that there are four characteristics of Peter Pan as a hero that are deconstructed, namely, honest, fearless, polite and caring. Those characteristics are deconstructed into the character of Peter Pan as a villain who is manipulative, fearful, impolite and selfish. The four characteristics that are deconstructed can be seen from Peter Pan’s action towards other characters, from other characters’ explanation or the character’s emotions through every relevant scene in the film.
The research entitled “The Deconstruction of Horror Film Formula in Midsommar by Ari Aster” aims to figure out the deconstruction of the horror film formula in Midsommar in contrast to horror film formula in general by Brigid Cherry. The researcher used a qualitative method to analyze the data. The primary data are taken from Ari Aster’s movie, Midsommar, in the form of cinematic codes such as setting, lighting, sound, and color. In addition, the researcher also used deconstruction theory in literature and cultural elements such as Scandinavian culture to analyze the deconstruction of horror film formulas in Midsommar film. The researcher found four binary oppositions of the horror film formula in Midsommar. The first one is the deconstruction of setting where Midsommar changes the common horror film formula setting of terrifying into peaceful. The second one is the deconstruction of lighting as Midsommar uses bright lighting instead of the common dark one. The third one is the deconstruction of sound as Midsommar uses dramatic sound instead of the common creepy one. Lastly, the deconstruction of color in Midsommar as it uses various colors instead of monotone ones that are commonly used in the horror film. This research illustrated the deconstruction of the horror film formula in the movie Midsommar from Brigid Cherry’s common original formula by reversing the non-dominant elements into becoming the dominant elements
Language policy in Indonesia have not completely indicated the dignity of Bahasa Indonesia as the national language of Indonesia. One reason why this phenomenon takes place is the lack of socialization of Bahasa Indonesia in public space. The use of English in Indonesian housing names indicates the violation to the position of Bahasa Indonesia as the national language. Despite the issue of Law No. 24/ 2009, the lack of socialization influences the use of English in Indonesian housing names. By using descriptive qualitative research and interview, this article enlightens the use of English in housing names related to the language policy. Analysis was done by identifying the policy released by the local government, developers’ consideration in creating a housing name and buyers’ consideration in choosing a house. This result shows that the use of English in Indonesian housing names are caused by the lack of socialization of the language policy. It suggests that the collaboration among the government, stakeholders and society is essential in preserving the language policy.
Transportable identities may be defined as characteristics which are latent or implicit but can be invoked during the interaction for particular reasons (Richards in Ushioda, 2011:16). Students' transportable identities can be a member of local sport club, small scale business owner, a member of university choir, a member of certain religious organizations, a broker, a band singer, or a band personnel. As language teachers, we need to understand this aspect now that by understanding their identities, our relationship will be closer and as a consequence their motivation to learn English can be enhanced as they are not merely treated as students or learners but perceived as a whole human being possessing multiple roles. This study is a case study focusing on one (or just a few) of a particular phenomenon with a view to providing an in-depth account of events, relationships, experiences or processes occurring in that particular instance (Denscombe, 2007:35). The study employed descriptive qualitative method. There were 38 respondents (5 lecturers and 33 students) involved in this research. The students were from English Undergraduate and English Diploma Program of Jenderal Soedirman University from 2019 and 2018 batches. To garner the data, there were two techniques employed namely questionnaire and interview. The results of the study showed that by understanding students' transportable identities, teachers' and students' rapport was enhanced which impacted to the students' motivation in oral skill.
This study is aimed at finding out a series of situation that lead up to divorce experienced by the characters in the novel. The analysis will be provided in the form of stages based on John Gottman's behavioral cascade model of marital dissolution. This cascade, which consists of four stages, is started with a behavior which is called as "complain/criticize", then followed by Defensiveness stage, contempt stage, and finally stonewalling stage. All those four stages will be used as the main theory to analyze the story of Hollywood divorces novel written by Jackie Collins. As this novel mainly tells about three female characters with their problem of husband-wife communication, which leads to their divorces, this study will also apply the ideas of feminism. By combining the Gottman's scale and feminism, it is expected that the process of analyzing the divorce stages experienced by Shelby Cheney (a talented film artist), Lola Sanchez (A sexy, young Latina superstar), and Cat Harrison (a hot nineteen-year old writer/director with a wild-child past) will be easily revealed. The result of this study shows that the characters have different tendency in each stage of behavioral cascades. In Shelby's case, each stage comes after the previous stages happened. Starts with a series of complaint of Linc's drinking habit in their early marriage, completed with some defensiveness anytime Linc deceives his promise of quitting to drink, and then followed by her contempt to her husband due to his womanizing habit, and ended up with stone-walling executed by both Shelby and Linc because they jealous each other to their co-star in their movie. Lola's case is different. She does not love her husband, Matt, from the beginning of their life. So, the very obvious stages that can be viewed are contempt and stone-walling. Although Matt tries hard to make everything better in their life, Lola keeps standing in distance from Matt and always thinks of getting divorce of him. For Cat Harrison's case, the complain stage is not that significant. The defensiveness, contempt and stone-walling stages happened almost at the same time after she caught her lovely husband sleep with some other women.
