Küreselleşme, sanayi devrimi sonrası şekillenen ve iktisadi, siyasi, kültürel boyutlarıyla tüm dünyayı etkisi altına alan bir olgudur. Uluslararası kuruluşlar ve çok uluslu işbirliği organizasyonları ile ulus devletin aşınmasına sebep olan küreselleşmenin, neoliberal doktrine koşut olarak, toplumların her birinin, bir şekilde, birbirine benzer hale gelmesine yol açtığı düşünülmektedir. Bu bağlamda, dünya nüfusunun % 55'ini bünyesinde barındıran kentler de, sermayenin yeniden üretildiği ve gerek iktisadi, gerekse kültürel metanın dolaşıma sokulduğu merkezler ve aktarım alanları olmaları noktasında önem taşımaktadırlar. Mekânsal ayrışma, sosyal sınıf kutuplaşması gibi kentsel çelişkilere imkân tanıyan küresel kentler, hem nüfus birikiminin hem de sermaye yoğunlaşmasının odağı haline gelmişlerdir. Küresel kentler, tektipleştirici, hegemonik bir aktarım aracı olarak görülmüş ve yerele ait olan maddi / manevi değerleri yozlaştırdığı ileri sürülerek eleştirilmiştir. Bu bağlamda, küresel kentlere alternatif olarak yeni kentsel yaşam formlarının oluşturulma çabalarına şahit olunmaktadır. Sakin Şehirler de, yerelin ve yerele ait olanın yaşanılabilir kılınması noktasında öne çıkan alternatiflerden birisidir. Bu çalışmada, Sakin Şehirlerin, küreselleşme olgusuna karşı bir oluşum mu yoksa yerel değerlerin küresel pazarda sunumuna olanak tanıyan bir küresel platform mu olduğunun ortaya çıkarılması amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, Türkiye'nin ilk beş sakin şehri çalışma kapsamına alınmıştır. Çalışma konusuna ilişkin kavramsal kabullerin aktarılmasının ardından, söz konusu şehirlere ilişkin yapılan çalışmaları temel alan literatür taraması ve bu şehirlerin tanıtım faaliyetlerine dayalı içerik değerlendirmesi yoluyla birtakım çıkarımlarda bulunulmuştur. İncelenen beş şehir özelinde, Sakin Şehirlerin, ulusal piyasaya yönelik birtakım iktisadi faaliyetlerinin bulunmasına rağmen, bunun, küresel eksene henüz ulaşmadığı ve bu şehirlerin hâlihazırda yereli ve yerele ait olanı kalkındırmayı önceledikleri gözlenmiştir.
