Frente às crescentes taxas de produção, venda e consumo de metilfenidato no Brasil, o presente artigo busca discutir a medicalização do tratamento do transtorno de déficit de atenção e hiperatividade, um transtorno neuropsiquiátrico que acomete crianças caracterizadas sintomatologicamente como desatentas, hiperativas e impulsivas.O transtorno de déficit de atenção e hiperatividade associa-se com significativo comprometimento funcional em diversas áreas e, à medida que o indivíduo cresce, ocorrem também taxas crescentes de co-morbidade psiquiátrica, portanto deve ser alvo de intervenção.O tratamento envolve o uso do metilfenidato na maioria dos casos. Há de se considerar, no entanto, que esta substância pode provocar efeitos adversos potenciais em crianças e que as co-morbidades associadas ao transtorno ou os sintomas resultantes de problemas na vida de relação das crianças dificultam o diagnóstico.Além disso, a propaganda velada do medicamento pode induzir educadores e responsáveis pela criança pressionar médicos a prescreverem o metilfenidato, o que pode ter como conseqüência o sobre-diagnóstico do transtorno de déficit de atenção e hiperatividade.Considerando que a propaganda, a comercialização e dispensação do metilfenidato são controladas sanitariamente, apontamos para a necessidade de se avaliar a efetividade de tais medidas de controle e sugerimos novas medidas.
