Aqueous phase reaction of trialkyloxonium tetrafluoroborates, R 3 O + BF 4 -(RdMe, Et) has been tested in the alkylation of simple inorganic anionic substrates such as halogen ions, cyanide, thiocyanate, sulphide and several oxoanions or their corresponding oxoacids. Gaseous products were separated and identified by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Alkylated derivatives RI, RBr, RCl were obtained for iodide, bromide, and chloride, respectively, while for fluoride its conversion efficiency to RF is very poor. RCN and R 2 S were obtained for cyanide and sulphide, while thiocyanate gives RSCN as a main reaction product with a minor amount of alkylisothiocyanate, RNCS (<7%). Among tested oxoanions only nitrites and nitrates give volatile derivatives under the form of RsOsNO and RsOsNO 2 , respectively. Reaction performed by adding Et 3 O + BF 4 -in CH 2 Cl 2 to aqueous sample with extraction in the organic phase of reaction products, failed to identify other less volatile reaction products. Using 2 mL sample in 4 mL reaction vial (T ) 25°C), 100 µL of 2 M Et 3 O + BF 4 -and injecting 250 µL of headspace into GC-MS, detection limits (3 s) are in the range of 1-280 ng mL -1 . Application to determination of bromide in groundwater certified reference material (BCR-612, 252 ( 10 µg kg -1 of bromide) gave results in excellent agreement with certified values. The method, being not responsive to iodate, allows the selective determination of iodide in the presence of iodate. Total iodine can be determined after reduction of iodate to iodide by NaBH 4 . Application of the method to iodide-iodate speciation in table salt gave results in excellent agreement with parallel analysis performed by ion chromatography as a reference method.

Gaseous fluoroethane was readily separated from the matrix, sampled from the headspace and determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The method was validated using rainwater certified reference material (IRMM CA408) and subsequently applied to the determination of fluoride in various matrices, including tap water, seawater, and urine. An instrumental limit of detection of 3.2 µg/L with a linear range up to 50 mg/L was achieved. The proposed derivatization is a one-step reaction, requires no organic solvents and is safe, as the derivatizing agent is nonvolatile. Determination of fluoride is affected by common fluoridecomplexing agents, such as Al(III) and Fe(III). The effect of large ...

The ethyl thiocyanate derivative is volatile and can be sampled from the headspace. The derivatization chemistry proposed allows for separation of the analyte from saliva matrix whose introduction in the measurement system is avoided. Quantitation of the analyte was obtained by isotope dilution, employing a 13 C-enriched thiocyanate as internal standard. Technical details and fundamental aspects of derivatization chemistry and calibration strategy are presented. The method was validated by comparison with a standard method based on ion chromatography. The two independent methodologies produced results in agreement within 3%. Also a three level spike recovery test was carried out for validation purpose and quantitative recoveries were attained. The method is fast, simple, safe, and sensitive. M...
Certification of trace metals in seawater certified reference materials (CRMs) NASS-7 and CASS-6 is described. At the National Research Council Canada (NRC), column separation was performed to remove the seawater matrix prior to the determination of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mn, Mo, Ni, U, V, and Zn, whereas As was directly measured in 10-fold diluted seawater samples, and B was directly measured in 200-fold diluted seawater samples. High-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICPMS) was used for elemental analyses, with double isotope dilution for the accurate determination of B, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mo, Ni, U, and Zn in seawater NASS-7 and CASS-6, and standard addition calibration for As, Co, Mn, and V. In addition, all analytes were measured using standard addition calibration with triple quadrupole (QQQ)-ICPMS to provide a second set of data at NRC. Expert laboratories worldwide were invited to contribute data to the certification of trace metals in NASS-7 and CASS-6. Various analytical methods were employed by participants including column separation, co-precipitation, and simple dilution coupled to ICPMS detection or flow injection analysis coupled to chemiluminescence detection, with use of double isotope dilution calibration, matrix matching external calibration, and standard addition calibration. Results presented in this study show that majority of laboratories have demonstrated their measurement capabilities for the accurate determination of trace metals in seawater. As a result of this comparison, certified/reference values and associated uncertainties were assigned for 14 elements in seawater CRMs NASS-7 and CASS-6, suitable for the validation of methods used for seawater analysis.

In the present study, significant improvement in analytical performance are achieved by using negative chemical ionization (CI-). Detection limits are improved for at least an order of magnitude than those achieved using electron impact ionization (EI). The derivatization procedure has been optimized and alkaline conditions are adopted to minimize the conversion of nitrite to nitrate (determined to be 0.07% at 100 mg/L NO 2 -) and to avoid the exchange of oxygen between the analytes and the solvent (water).Quantitation entails the use of isotopically enriched standards (N 18 O 2 -and 15 NO 3 -), which also permits monitoring of potential conversion from nitrite to nitrate during the analysis (double spike isotope dilution).
