The colour change of poplar was evaluated after exposure to a wide range of steaming parameters (90-110 °C, 1-20 days) for getting brown colour for indoor applications. The generated brown colour was homogeneous throughout the whole cross section. The colour saturation can be doubled by steaming. Steaming increased both redness and yellowness values and reduced the lightness. The initial redness value was multiplied 4.5 times.
Abstract. Tolvaj L, Banadics EA, Tsuchikawa S, Mitsui K, Preklet E. 2019. Color modification and homogenization of sugi wood by steaming. Asian J For 3: 20-24. Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) wood samples were steamed applying broad range of steaming time (0-20 days) at 90 and 110°C steaming temperatures. The color change was monitored objectively using the CIE Lab color system. A wide range of colors was created by steaming between the initial color and light brown color depending on the steaming time and temperature. The initial color of earlywood and latewood within sapwood and heartwood covered a wide range of hue. The initial redness and yellowness values ranged from 4.3 to 17.3 and 21.4 to 31.6 units, respectively. Steaming produced excellent color homogenization and increased saturation. After 9 days of steaming at 110°C, redness values converged, falling between 11.6 and 12.7 units. The yellowness values increased and also converged. After 9 days of steaming at 110°C the yellowness values were between 31.6 and 33.5 units. The color saturation of the examined tissues increased considerably and was also showed homogenized. After 9 days of steaming at 110°C, the saturation values were between 34.1 and 35.6 units (the initial values were between 22.6 and 32.1). It was difficult to differentiate the sapwood and heartwood at the end of the steaming process at 110°C.
Plantation poplar (Populus x euramericana cv. Pannonia) wood samples were steamed at 100 °C, 110 °C, and 120 °C and then irradiated by a strong UV emitter mercury lamp to test their colour stability. The colour change was evaluated and presented in a CIE Lab colour coordinate system. For the control, unsteamed poplar specimens were irradiated using the same mercury lamp. A considerable increase in colour saturation in the specimens was generated by steaming, and the saturation value further increased during the UV treatment. The lightness value of the unsteamed control specimens decreased continuously during the entire UV irradiation period. In contrast, the lightness value of the steamed samples decreased only during the first seven hours of the UV treatment and remained constant afterward. Steaming enhanced the redness stability of the poplar wood against UV irradiation. Modification of wood components during steaming at 120 °C stabilised the poplar wood redness against short-term photodegradation. Steaming slightly reduced the yellow colour sensitivity of the poplar to photodegradation.
Kulcsszavak: egzóta fafajok, akác, gőzölés, színeltérés Substitution of dark exotic wood species by steamed black locust AbstractBlack locust wood was steamed to create colours similar to those of dark exotic species. A wide range of brown shades can be created by steaming black locust. It was found that these colour tones give the same feeling as the dark exotic species, regardless if these colours match those of any exotic species or not. The appropriate steaming parameters were determined for creating the same or similar colour as some exotic species have. It was observed that the total colour difference (ΔE*) is inefficient in monitoring the visually observed colour difference, if the difference was created by differences in the red hue component. Keywords: exotic species, black locust, steaming, colour difference BevezetésA sötét színű egzóta fafajok iránti kereslet miatt jelentős kiterjedésű trópusi őserdőt vágnak ki évente. Ezeknek az őserdőknek a visszaszorulása jelentős hatással van a klímaváltozásra. Ezért fontos keresni azokat a lehetőségeket, melyekkel a sötét egzóta faanyagokat helyettesíthetjük. A gőzölés olyan színváltoztató eljárás, mely nem párosul toxikus anyagok felhasználásával, de a magas extraktanyag-tartalmú faanyagoknál jelentős színváltozást lehet elérni vele.A faanyagot vagy a színváltoztatás érdekében, vagy a megmunkálás könnyebbé tételéért gőzölik. A szín-változtatás azoknál a faanyagoknál célszerű, melyeknek a természetes színe nem tetszetős, vagy zavaróan inhomogén. Az akác faanyagra mindkét megállapítás igaz. Az akác faanyag színe esztétikai szempontból jelentősen eltér a faanyagok többségétől. Hiányzik belőle a barnás árnyalat, mely a faanyag kellemes, meleg színárnyalatát adja. 2010). Az ipari akácgőzölés eredményeit először Molnár (1976) publikálta. Más faanyagok esetében viszont a jellegtelen szürkésfehér szín módosítása a cél. Ide sorolható a bükk fa...
