<p>ABSTRACT<br />The Banggai Cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni) or capungan Banggai (often abbreviated as BCF) is a marine fish endemic to the waters around the Banggai Archipelago, caught in large numbers for the marine aquarium trade. The conservation of this endemic species became an international issue, in 2007 the BCF was proposed for CITES listing by the USA and listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List. The CITES proposal was withdrawn, with Indonesia committed to conserve the Banggai Cardinalfish through a sustainable ornamental fishery approach. The multi-stakeholder Banggai Cardinalfish Action Plan (2007-2012) and other initiatives have aimed towards this goal; however the initiative to secure limited protected status in 2011 failed. Studies during 2011-2012 found many positive developments in the BCF fishery, and if the carrying capacity (stocks and ecosystems) was similar to the early 2000’s, current official exploitation levels should be sustainable. However a stock assessment analysis using FISAT II revealed a high exploitation level (0.5), indicating catches may have reached or possibly exceeded sustainable limits. Survey/monitoring results indicate the endemic population is not in a steady state, with sharp declines in the past decade. There are strong indications that habitat degradation is the main cause of this decline, including over-exploitation of key BCF micro-habitat (sea urchins and sea anemones). Without an effective solution to protect the supporting ecosystem, P. Kauderni will be increasingly threatened with extinction, with or without fishing pressure. The case of the BCF highlights the importance of an ecosystem-based approach to fisheries policy and management.<br />Key words: ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management, Pterapogon kauderni, stock<br />assessment, sustainable ornamental fishery</p><p>-------</p><p><br />ABSTRAK<br />Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni) yang sering disingkat BCF atau capungan Banggai merupakan ikan laut endemik di perairan Banggai Kepulauan dan sekitarnya yang ditangkap dalam jumlah besar untuk diperdagangkan sebagai ikan hias. Kasus BCF menunjukkan pentingya pendekatan ecosystem-based approach terhadap kebijakan dan manajemen perikanan tangkap.</p><p><br />Kata kunci: ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management, Pterapogon kauderni,<br />pengkajian stok, sustainable ornamental fishery</p>
Marine area which is planted by seagrass called as seagrass beds. Seagrass is one of the typical ecosystems in marine waters. Bangka Belitung Province is one of the areas in Indonesia that has seagrass ecosystem. This study aims to determine the diversity, density, and coverage area of seagrass beds in the waters of South Bangka Regency. The research was conducted in Tukak, Tanjung Kerasak, and Tanjung Kemirai. The data is collected using quadratic transect method and also data of physics-chemical parameters such as temperature, salinity, pH, depth, velocity and water substrate. The results of the research showed that 7 species of seagrasses in South Bangka Regency are Cymodocea serrulata, Cymodocea rotundata, Halodule uninervis, Enhalus acoroides, Thalassia hemprichii, Syringodium isoetifolium and Halophila minor. Seagrass in Lempeng waters which has the highest density is Cymodocea serrulata, about 58 ind/m2. The highest frequency of seagrass species in Tukak is Thalassia hemprichii about 1%. Seagrass species of Cymodocea serrulata has the highest cover percentage in Lempeng waters about 29.56%.
The province of South Kalimantan has the largest peat swamp that is named Danau Panggang Swamp with an area of 5,390.7 Ha. This swamp has ecological, economic and potential functions of a large fishery resource. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the exploitation rate of Snake Head Fish (Channa striata) in Danau Panggang Swamp, by population dynamic analysis using FISAT program of Von Bertalanffy method. The results showed that the growth pattern of Snake Head Fish (Channa striata) has the tendency to grow negative allometric with 63.4 cm of long infifer (L¥), growth rate (k) 0.15 per year, theoretical age at the time of the fish is equal to 0 (t0) is -1.48257 years. While the natural mortality rate (M) was 0.43, the mortality rate due to catch (F) of 0.69/year and the total mortality rate (Z) of 1.12/year, and the rate of exploitation value E = 0.62. These results indicated that the exploitation rate of Head Snake Fish (Channa striata) in Danau Panggang swamp has a tendency to overfishing.
Abstract. Sofarini D, Herawati EY, Mahmudi M, Hertika AMS, Arfiati D, Musa M, Amin M, Supriharyono. 2019. Analysis of stomach content of piscivorous fishes caught in Danau Panggang Peatland, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 3788-3793. The purpose of this study was to analyze the stomach content profile of piscivorous fishes caught at the reservaat station and the station without activity as The control station, in the Danau Panggang peatland. Sampling was carried out four times and the index of preponderance stomach content was determined in piscivorous fishes. The results showed there were nine fish species in the reservaat area, including Cryptopterus spp., Pangasius nieuwenhuisii, Chana striata, Anabas testudineus, Pangasius sp., Mastecembelus erythrotaenia, Macrognathus aculeatus, Mystus nigriceps, and Mystus nemurus. Their gut was dominated 89% by Chrysophyta, and 37.5% by Diatom and Navicula. In the area without activity, six species of fish were caught, including Cryptopterus spp, Pangasius nieuwenhuisii, Anabas testudineus, Pangasius sp, Mystus nigriceps, and Mystus nemurus, with 83% of their gut dominated by Diatom. The water temperature was 28.07-33.25º C, brightness (6-115 cm), pH of 4.23-6.97, dissolved oxygen (DO) (1.4-6.5 mg/L) and BOD (7.52-24.92 mg/L) i.e., water quality parameters that tend to be incompatible with the persistence of fishes. These limiting factors of peatland water and extreme conditions led to a limitation at availability of natural food for piscivorous fishes.
Abstract. Fadjar M, Islamy RA, Herawati EY. 2019. Short communication: First record of Arapaima gigas (Schinz, 1822) (Teleostei: Osteoglossomorpha), in the Brantas River, Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 3527-3531. The arapaima (= Arapaima gigas) is the largest freshwater fish in the Neotropical region, obligate air-breathing fish that known to reach up to 3 m - 3.90 m in length and 200 kg in weight endemic to the Amazon basin. Arapaima gigas is giant osteoglossomorph and obligate air‐breathing fish and also a native species of the Amazon basin. We present the first record of Arapaima gigas (Schinz, 1822) in Brantas River, Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia with diagnostic meristic and morphometrics of the specimens analyzed following Stewart method. Herein, it recorded from the Brantas River basin. This record based on the finding of one live specimen on the tributary of Brantas River basin, and in situ observation of juveniles and adults in the river).
