Comme la plupart des antiquisants en Allemagne, il a travaillé autant sur le monde grec que romain. Ses intérêts portent avant tout sur l'image et les oeuvres d'art dans leur contexte politique, social et en rapport avec l'étude des mentalités. Il s'est également occupé d'urbanisme et d'espace public dans les cités grecques ou romaines. Il a de même travaillé sur l'espace religieux, les sanctuaires et les rituels. Enfin il a abordé les problèmes des fondements théoriques de l'archéologie classique.
