O açaizeiro (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) é uma espécie da Amazônia, sendo o estado do Pará o principal centro de dispersão natural e maior produtor de frutos. Estudos da fisiologia da espécie, especialmente na etapa de mudas, ainda são escassos. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o crescimento inicial de mudas de açaí em função de diferentes níveis de sombreamento. As mudas, obtidas de sementes, foram transplantadas para sacos de polietileno preto contendo substrato comercial e mantidas em viveiro a 50% de sombreamento, por 30 dias, até se estabelecerem. Então foram aplicados os tratamentos de 0% (pleno sol), 30%, 50% e 70% de sombreamento. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com quatro tratamentos (níveis de sombreamento) e doze repetições. Após cem dias, foram avaliadas a altura (cm), o diâmetro (cm), o número de folhas, o comprimento da raiz (cm), a biomassa seca da raiz (g), da parte aérea (g) e total (g), área foliar (cm2) e teor relativo de clorofila. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância seguida de análise de regressão, se significativos pelo teste F. A altura, o número de folhas, o acúmulo de biomassa seca da raiz, da parte aérea e total e a área foliar apresentaram incremento com o aumento do sombreamento, sendo superior em 70%. O diâmetro e comprimento das raízes não apresentaram diferença significativa enquanto o teor relativo de clorofila reduziu após 30% de sombreamento. As mudas de açaí responderam favoravelmente ao sombreamento, sugerindo 70% o mais indicado para produção de mudas em viveiro.
