Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a ocorrência de caracteres discretos em esternos de esqueletos humanos identificados, com o intuito de apresentar informações individualizantes que possam auxiliar a identificação humana. A amostra foi composta por 265 esternos pertencentes a esqueletos da coleção do Centro de Estudos em
Objetiva-se relatar e descrever um caso de impactação e inversão de caninos superiores permanentes, discutindo-se o seu valor para o processo de identificação humana. A pesquisa foi realizada com esqueleto pertencente à Coleção de Esqueletos Identificados do Centro de Estudos em Antropologia Forense (CEAF) da Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade de Pernambuco (FOP/UPE). Inicialmente, o esqueleto foi montado em posição anatômica e posteriormente procedeu-se à descrição dos ossos presentes e das alterações observadas, bem como às fotografias da ossada. O esqueleto pertencia a indivíduo do sexo feminino, com 82 anos de idade à morte e apresentou, ao exame macroscópico, a impactação e total inversão de ambos os caninos permanentes superiores. Os referidos dentes apresentavam-se localizados lateralmente e no terço médio da crista zigomático-alveolar da maxila, em posição verticalmente invertida (com as coroas voltadas para as bases das órbitas e raízes voltadas para os rebordos alveolares). Essa variação apresenta uma baixa frequência de ocorrência na população e, assim como todas as outras anomalias, funcionam como fatores individualizantes, tornando os indivíduos ainda mais únicos. Quando apropriadamente registradas em prontuário odontológico, servem como excelentes fontes de dados ante mortem, no processo de identificação humana, a partir do confronto com as informações post mortem coletados nos exames necroscópicos. Por isso, é importante que, cada vez mais, os Cirurgiões-dentistas adquiram a consciência do valor dos prontuários clínicos e cumpram com o dever de elaborá-lo e mantê-lo atualizado, explicitamente expresso no Código de Ética Odontológica.

Método: Foi realizada uma revisão narrativa nas bases de dados Literatura Latino-americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS) e GOOGLE ACADÊMICO no período de março à maio de 2022, com artigos em português e inglês, filtrando a pesquisa entre os anos de 2010 a 2022. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo relatar um caso de espondilite anquilosante observado em um esqueleto que pertence ao Centro de Estudos em Antropologia Forense da Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade de Pernambuco (CEAF/FOP/UPE), destacando a importância das patologias ósseas no processo de identificação humana. O esqueleto estudado pertence ao sexo masculino e tinha 65 anos de idade quando da morte. A ossada foi disposta em posição anatômica e analisada macroscopicamente. Foram observadas a fusão das vértebras C3 e C4, a presença de sindesmofitose envolvendo as vértebras de T8 a T11, a fusão das costelas à coluna, e a fusão da articulação sacro-ilíaca direita. Numa perícia antropológica na qual o profissional seja capaz de identificar a EA no esqueleto e os familiares da provável vítima reúnam informações que mostrem a presença da doença durante a sua vida, a obtenção da identificação é facilitada. A EA pode ser útil na identificação humana em situações em que apenas restos ósseos são encontrados, principalmente quando há fusão vertebral, anquilose e sindesmófitos presentes, porém deve ser usada em conjunto com outros métodos de identificação.
