Prezentowana wieloautorska książka jest efektem kilkuletniej zespołowej pracy członkiń Zakładu Socjologii Płci i Ruchów Społecznych Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego w ramach projektu badawczego pt. "Kulturowe koncepcje płci i wieku a postawy kobiet i mężczyzn wobec swego zdrowia i wyglądu", zrealizowanego w latach 2013-2016 pod kierunkiem Ewy Malinowskiej. Projekt został sfinansowany ze środków Narodowego Centrum Nauki przyznanych na podstawie decyzji numer DEC-2012/05/B/ HS6/03793 1. Jego celem była analiza wpływu kulturowych koncepcji płci (kobiecości i męskości) oraz kulturowych koncepcji wieku (młodości, wieku średniego i starości) na postawy jednostek wobec własnego wyglądu i zdrowia. Koncepcja badań realizowanych w ramach tego projektu wprowadza nową perspektywę teoretyczno-badawczą poprzez wskazanie powiązania płci kulturowej (gender) oraz kulturowo określanego wieku i stworzenie nowej kategorii socjologicznej "upłciowionego wieku" (gendered age). Badając postawy kobiet i mężczyzn w różnym wieku wobec wyglądu i zdrowia, traktowanych jako składniki indywidualnego kapitału ludzkiego, podjęto próbę określenia związku między przekonaniami, ocenami i zachowaniami ludzi wobec tych zasobów a funkcjonującymi w świadomości społecznej kulturowymi koncepcjami płci, wieku i upłciowionego wieku. Badania miały charakter jakościowy: zrealizowano 12 sesji zogniskowanych wywiadów grupowych oraz 90 wywiadów swobodnych z kobietami i mężczyznami-zaliczanymi ze względu na wiek metrykalny do ludzi młodych, w wieku średnim i starych, mającymi co najmniej średnie wykształcenie, mieszkańcami dużego miasta-Łodzi.
