RESUMOA construção de uma identidade sul-americana permeia as origens e objetivos da União de Nações Sul-Americanas e do Conselho de Defesa Sul-Americano. Este artigo visa verificar se houve essa construção, a partir de seis variáveis construtivistas: (i) o sentimento de destino comum; (ii) a base histórico-cultural; (iii) os processos sociais presentes a partir de práticas e hábitos comuns; (iv) a dinâmica de diferenciação do outro; (v) o uso de identidade coletiva como dispositivo retórico; e (vi) o grau de percepção das diferenças sócio-psicológicas entre os agentes. Nossa conclusão é que, embora tenha lançado mão de uma narrativa normativa, a socialização criada pela UNASUL não foi suficiente para criar e/ou sustentar uma identidade sulamericana em defesa, e tampouco há indícios de que haverá tal construção no futuro próximo.
