Aim/background: in view of the growing demand for food, new methodologies are needed to improve the genomic selection (GS) methodology to obtain more productive plant varieties and there is empirical evidence that GS it is revolutionizing plant breeding for food production around the world. Methods: since the prediction models play a key role in GS, for this reason Montesinos-López et al. (2018) proposed the item based collaborative filtering (IBCF) algorithm for Genomic prediction. For this reason, in this paper we compare the IBCF algorithm with the most popular genomic prediction model called the Genomic Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (GBLUP). Results: We found that the GBLUP is superior than the IBCF model, but the IBCF is competitive to the GBLUP model since produced very similar predictions, but with the large advantage that it is extremely efficient in terms of time for implementation. Conclusions: we found that the GBLUP is better than the IBCF algorithm but the IBCF is more than 400 times more efficient than the GBLUP model in terms of time for implementation.
Whether as food for human consumption or for medical applications, for this reason it is required information about its viability in the marketplace. Therefore, the objective of this study was to measure the perceptions and attitudes about the production and consumption of consumers towards GMOs in the state of Colima, Mexico at 2015. As materials and methods to obtain information a questionnaire with 60 questions that encompassed in 11 latent factors was structured. The questionnaire was applied to 1 000 people of the urban localities of Colima, México. The results revealed important similarities and differences with studies in other countries, showing mainly that respondents did not have sufficient information on GMOs, have a high distrust toward GMOs, and not perceive their social value and positive health effects beyond increasing agricultural productivity. We conclude that it is necessary to generate and provide scientifically accurate information on GMOs to the people, so they are better informed and can give a critical opinion on the use of GMOs.Keywords: genetically modified organisms, consumer perceptions and attitudes, Colima.
The goal of this study was to evaluate the performance of 36 wheat winter (Triticum aestivum L.) lines in organic systems in three locations in Nebraska, to compare the performance of the released cultivars with experimental lines to help in the process of selection, to study the magnitude and behavior of genotype-by-environment interaction for grain yield, anthesis date, plant height, protein content, grain volume weight and vegetation index, and to identify the more stable genotypes. Linear mixed models and site regression model was implemented for reaching the objectives of the present research. Genotypic and GE interaction are significant across the three locations for all traits except for anthesis date. Environment were significant for the six traits. Yield is negative correlated with protein content and plant height. In general the genetic correlation explained more of the genotype performance, although the GE interaction was significant. The best genotypes for grain yield across the three environments were genotypes NW03666, SD07165, NE07444 and Overland. For vegetation index the best lines were: Lyman and Buckskin. For grain volume weight the best lines were: Lyman, NW03681, Danby and Goodstreak. For anthesis date all genotypes were similar. For plant height, the best lines were Goodstreak, Buckskin and Clarkscream. For protein content, the best lines were Goodstreak, Karl92, Lyman, and Clarkscream. In general the average grain yield of the experimental lines was better than the released lines. For anthesis date, the performance was similar between experimental and released lines. However, for vegetation index, plant height, grain volume weight and protein content, the average performance of the experimental lines was lower than the released lines.
Introduction: this paper presents the development and validation of an instrument to measure the perceptions and attitudes about the production and consumption of the Mexican urban consumers towards genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Method: The proposed questionnaire contains 63 questions that encompassed 11 latent factors that was applied to 14,720 people of the Mexican urban population aged between 18 to 65 years. This measuring questionnaire was validated using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results: we found that it is acceptable the proposed instrument for measuring perceptions and attitudes towards genetically modified organisms (PAGMOs) for the urban Mexican population. Discussion and Conclusion: The same instrument (construct) it is suitable for each of the 8 regions studied since with the multi-group CFA performed we found evidence that this is valid for each of the regions under study. Also, the analysis of the questions of the proposed instrument revealed that participants have a low general knowledge, a high distrust towards GMOs, want labeling of genetically modified (GM) products and not perceive their social values and positive health effects beyond increasing agricultural productivity.
Introduction:To know the perceptions and attitudes about the labeling of products made with genetically modified organisms (GMO), of students from five universities in central Mexico, in the following areas of knowledge: natural sciences, health sciences, chemical sciences, economic and administrative sciences and biological and agricultural sciences. Methodological design and approach: In the study, 2923 students answered a questionnaire with Likert scale of five questions. It is important to mention that the original questionnaire has 64 variables and 11 factors to measure the perceptions, attitudes, benefits and risks on the production and consumption of GMO. Results: Of the total sample 16.60% always read the labels, 85.70% agree that the label should show the characteristics of the product. 82.90% said that when making promotions should be reported on the label the characteristics of the product and finally 82.90% answered that the Mexican government should legislate a legal framework to regulate the mandatory labeling of products made with GMOs. Discussion or Conclusion. The sample only cover 5 Mexican universities. The relevant contribution of this research provides an empirical knowledge about the perceptions and attitudes regarding the labeling of products with GMOs content from a sample of the population of five public universities in central Mexico. This study is an important contribution for Mexican society, because there is no legal framework to regulate the labeling of products with GMO content and that it is essential to strengthen the training of university students with scientific information in this field. The labeling of products made with GMOs is generating relevant controversies worldwide, so it is important to know and spread the perceptions and attitudes of the sample considered in this study.
