Todos os dias, nossos meios de comunicação noticiam algum maravilhoso e inovador avanço na biomedicina-novas tecnologias de reprodução que dão esperança aos inférteis e permitem aos pais "moldarem" seus filhos, novos tratamentos com célulastronco para lesões na coluna vertebral e para Alzheimer, novas maneiras de examinar nossos genomas à procura de fragilidades no organismo, remédios que irão não apenas aliviar nossa depressão, mas também nos deixar mais felizes e inteligentes, drogas que podem estender a expectativa de vida dos habitantes do ocidente rico. Como devemos avaliar essa mistura complexa de esperança e propaganda em relação à saúde? Além da propaganda, quais serão as implicações políticas e econômicas desses avanços? Irão remodelar nossa sociedade, família, nossos próprios sentimentos de quem somos e do que podemos esperar? E como ficará a geopolítica, já que a China, Índia, Coréia do Sul, e vários outros países do oriente investem pesado em desenvolvimento e em pesquisas biomédicas e sobre genomas? A biomedicina "high tech" irá exacerbar ou aliviar a escandalosa desigualdade global na saúde? Diretores, convidados, colegas e amigos.
