The high thermal efficiency and the use of low carbon content fuel (e.g., natural gas) have made the Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) one of the best choices for power generation due to its benefits associate with low cost and low environmental impact. The performance of Unfired Steam Cycle (USC) as a part of the CCPP has significant impact on the performance of the whole power plant as it provides the CCPP with around one third of the total useful power. An accurate performance simulation of the USC is therefore necessary to analyze the effects of various operating parameters on the performance of combined cycle power plant. In this paper, a performance simulation approach for an unfired steam cycle using single and dual pressure-level of an OTSG is presented. The developed modeling method has been applied to the performance simulation of an existing unfired steam cycle power generation unit installed at Manx Electricity Authority and the results are promising. A comparison between simulated and actual performance at design and off design operating conditions of the same USC has shown a remarkable agreement with errors values below 1%.
One of the key elements of increasing the thermal efficiency of a combined cycle power plant (CCPP) is to improve the design and operation of the heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) utilized in the cycle. Once-through steam generator (OTSG) is a new technology introduced for heat recovery in power systems. It eliminates boiler drums and other components of conventional HRSGs. The simplicity and compactness of an OTSG justifies its application in combined cycle power plants. This paper describes a design principle and an analytical sizing approach that will assist OTSG’s designers to achieve a good design by determining the core dimension, volume of an OTSG for given flow rates and their entering and leaving temperatures as well as the heat transfer area on the smoke side. The developed model has been tested with reference to a scaled model of an existing OTSG that is installed at Manx Electricity Authority and the results were promising. The overall characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop distributions of the OTSG “scaled model” shows general agreement with the real characteristics of the existing OTSG with error values less than 1%.
During the worldwide combined cycle power plant (CCPP) power plant building boom high pressure steam cycle has been the design of choice for the most power plant developers. In combined cycle power plant; there are many key areas that can be focused on for improving the thermal efficiency of the cycle and their performances. One of these areas is the unfired heat recovery steam generator so-called once through steam generator (OTSG). The unfired utility scale OTSG is a critical component in the combined cycle power plant, since it is the connection between the gas turbine (GT) and the steam turbine (ST) power units. In this paper, an adequate model has been developed for performance simulation of the once through steam generator OTSG in CCPP application. This model is well applicable for single and two-level of the steam cycle operation pressure. The developed model was tested against an existing OTSG installed at Manx Electricity Authority, and the obtained results and conclusions from this effort are satisfactory with a neglected error and will be a magnificent starting point for future improvements.
