Len jest rośliną roczną uprawianą w klimacie umiarkowanym. Najczęściej uprawianym gatunkiem jest len zwyczajny Linum usitatissimum L. Roślina ta jest surowcem do produkcji sznurów, przędzy, zaś nasiona lnu coraz częściej mają zastosowanie w kosmetologii i lecznictwie. Nasiona lnu zawierają wiele cennych substancji, ważnych dla zdrowia ludzi i zwierząt. Tłoczony nazimno olej lniany posiada cenne walory dietetyczne i prozdrowotne. Zawarte woleju lnianym kwasy tłuszczowe mają zdolność redukowania stężenia triacylogliceroli w osoczu krwi, normalizują ciśnienie krwi, działają przeciwzakrzepowo, hamują rozwój choroby niedokrwiennej serca. Wykazują działanie przeciwnowotworowe oraz poprawiają stan skóry i włosów. Opatrunki z lnu genetycznie zmodyfikowanego działają jak naturalny antybiotyk. W pracy zostały przedstawione wyniki zastosowania oleju lnianego tłoczonego na zimno i nasion lnu w żywieniu ludzi z podwyższonym poziomem cholesterolu we krwi. Wyniki badań wskazują, że stosowaniew codziennej diecie nasion lnu i oleju lnianego tłoczonego na zimno może wspomóc i znacznie przyspieszyć proces obniżania cholesterolu w organizmie człowieka, co może mieć wpływ na polepszenie kondycji fizycznej i lepsze samopoczucie.
