Published in the Russian Federation Oriental Studies (Previous Name: Bulletin of the Kalmyk Institute for Humanities of the Russian Academy of Sciences) Has been issued as a journal since 2008
Introduction. Contemporary Kalmyk studies are characterized by that there are still a number of insufficiently explored issues dealing with the shaping of the Kalmyk ethnos, including that of identities of their ancestors within materials related to the religious tradition. Goals. The article seeks to reveal the ties between identities of Kalmyks and Oirats ― and fellow countrymen communities of Drepung Gomang Monastery at earliest stages of Buddhist history among the Mongolic peoples. Results. The work clarifies the specific features of identifying Oirats and Kalmyks through the prism of the Tibetan monastic tradition, and shows the historical changes of identity-related terms. Currently, Drepung Gomang comprises a total of 16 countrymen communities-kangtsens (Tib. khang-tshan) further divided into 22 mitsans (Tib. mi-tshang), i. e. local communities. Representatives of Mongolia and students from Russia’s Buryatia and Tyva are included in Samlo Kangtsen (Tib. bSam-blo Khang-tshan), and the latter’s ten mitsans comprise one referred to as Khalkha Mitsan. As for Kalmyk students, they are affiliated to Hardong Kangtsen (Tib. Har-gdong Khang-tshan) that numbers nine mitsans, and those related to Oirats, Southern Mongols and Kalmyks are Tsokha, Joorche, and Thorgo (Torghut) ones. The emergence of Thorgo and Tsokha Mitsans is closely tied to the history of Oirats and Kalmyks. The paper concludes the name of Thorgo Mitsan is historically related to the identity of prominent Kalmyk monks within Drepung Gomang Monastery, and up to the late 18th century served to denoted the community of monks from the Kalmyk Khanate proper. After the exodus of Kalmyks from the Volga and their resettlement across Xinjiang, Thorgo Mitsan was largely inhabited by the newly arrived ethnic Kalmyks of Torghut descent. Such historical transformations may have introduced structural changes within mitsans, which resulted from ethnic identities of Oirat or Kalmyk monks admitted.
Introduction. The article deals with an item contained in the Buddhist Collection of Tatarstan’s National Museum. Buddhist art is essentially canonical, which sets forth some difficulties to be faced when it comes to refer certain pieces to different regional schools. Goals. The paper attempts a comparative analysis of the Buddhist statuette from the National Museum of Tatarstan and suggests an attribution of the unique item. Results. The analysis shows the figurine (inv. no. КП-10367/9) depicts a Mongolian Lama. It is headdress that proves a most significant element since the former is characteristic of Jebtsundamba Khutuktus of Khalkha. So, our further insights do attest to the statuette depicts a Bodg Gegeen of Mongolia. And there is reason to presume this is an early sculptural portrait of the 8th Bodg Gegeen — Jebtsundamba Khutuktu of Khalkha.
Introduction. Oirat old-script texts tell us about the prominent historical figure of Noyon Galdma (Kalm., Oir. Һалдма, Һалдмба; Mong. Галдамаа, Галдамбаа), son of Khan Ochirtu-Tsetsen, grandson of Khan Baibagas of the Khoshuts and Khong Tayiji Erdeni-Baatar of Dzungaria. The image and memory of Galdama has been preserved in oral folklore of Mongols. Goals. The article attempts a review of studies to have dealt with Galdama, seeks to analyze the reasons underlying his popularity in Mongolic folklore traditions, and reveal peculiarities of the image characteristic of different genres. Results. The historical figure — the son of Khan Ochirtu-Tsetsen — is widely known in written and oral traditions of Mongolic peoples, e.g., Galdama is mentioned in Ratnabhadra’s Biography of Zaya Pandita and other narratives. Mongolists have been dealing with epic songs of Galdama for over a century already, a total of circa twenty legends about this hero have been recorded. The seventeenth-century Oirat nobleman’s name is nowadays integral to diverse Mongolic cultures, such as Kalmyks and Buryats of Russia, Oirats of Western Mongolia and China’s Xinjiang (Torghuts, Upper Mongols, Olots), as well as Alasha Khoshuts and Ejine Torghuts inhabiting Inner Mongolia (PRC). So, versions of Galdma-related songs number over thirty. Conclusions. The dissemination of folklore texts centered around the renown protector of native territories believed to have been a skilful warrior and chieftain of border detachments is associated with the theme of homeland defense that was most urgent during the lifetime of Noyon Galdama (1635–1667) — when all Mongols faced an increasing threat of Manchu invasion, and the Congress of 1640 developed The Great Code of Laws that proclaimed defense of Mongol-inhabited domains a supreme goal and virtue. Mythologization of Galdama’s image also attests to the significance of his personality in Oirat history, which can be traced in Oirat folklore heritage.
