O presente artigo analisa a concepção de populações tradicionais e os conflitos territoriais que ocorreram na segunda metade do século XX na Amazônia, levando em consideração que o processo de ocupação dessa região, comandado pelos governos militares, não reconhecia o regime de propriedade comum dos povos nativos. Aborda-se ainda como essas populações, à luz do contexto ambientalista, passam a ser vistas como parceiros de programas de desenvolvimento sustentável.
