Students� disfluency in speaking is caused by limited practice, incorrect pronunciation, and inappropriate learning methods. That of the last point drove this research in finding out the effectiveness of using Project-based Learning (PBL) to improve students� speaking skills. The study participants were 59 students of the seventh graders of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kudus, divided into the experimental and the control classes using a quasi-experimental research design. The data were obtained from the pre-test and the post-test. The results showed that the students� speaking ability mean scores in both classes were higher in the post-test than in the pre-test. In addition, the independent sample t-test supported the result in the hypothesis testing. It means that project-based learning applied had a significant difference or effective to improve young-learner students� speaking skills. To conclude, using this method created more fun, active, and interactive speaking class atmosphere for young learners.
This research aims at finding out whether or not the use of extensive reading is effective for teaching writing explanation text to the eleventh grade at Islamic University in Semarang. Quasi experimental research was applied as the method. The researchers took two groups as the sample, they were XI MIPA 6 as the experimental class and XI MIPA 2 as the control class. The total subject of this research was 65. This research used SPSS in analysing the data of writing test through several activities. They were pre-test before treatments, and post-test after treatments. The result of the research shows the significance difference in the writing ability of explanation text between eleventh-graders who were taught by using extensive reading and those were not taught by using it. It can be seen in the result of mean score in the post-test of experimental class which is 64.4118 and control class which is 48.5484 and as a result Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.00 < 0.05. Therefore, the null hyothesis of this research is rejected. It means that the use of extensive reading had significantly improved the eleventh-graders’ writing ability of the explanation text in English teaching and learning process of the experimental class at Islamic School in Semarang in the academic year 2018/2019.
The purpose of this study was to investigate how students perceive about guided writing as a means of learning descriptive text. Descriptive quantitative method was employed, and a questionnaire served as the data collection tool. Seventy ninth graders from one school in Central Java made up the study's sample. The questionnaire has 16 questions broken down into 4 categories: the effectiveness of the timing, the easiness of using correct spelling, the support from the teacher, the benefits of guided writing. The data analysis showed that students had a favorable impression of guided writing. It also demonstrated the usefulness of guided writing as a teaching method for writing a descriptive text.
Students’ autonomy is important in language learning since students’ autonomy is considered one of the elements in successful language learning. This study aimed to explore the students’ autonomy levels in language learning by considering the characteristics of autonomous students and the factors that affected students’ autonomy. As a mixed-method study, this study combined questionnaires and interviews as the instruments. The sample of this research was 34 students of XII MIPA 1 of SMA Negeri 2 Semarang. The quantitative data regarding students’ autonomy levels showed: emerging (0%), beginning (14.12%), intermediate (57.60%), and advanced (28.28%). It indicated that the majority of the students’ autonomy level in language learning is considered at the intermediate level. While the mean of quantitative data regarding the factors influencing students’ autonomy showed: students’ role (21.13%), teacher’s role (21.83%), task (16.90%), environment (21.83%), material (18.31%). It indicated that students agreed that students’ autonomy was influenced by those supporting factors. The qualitative data revealed that the students’ autonomous skills were also supported by several factors, such as students’ goals and motivation, teacher and students’ bond, learning materials and activities, and a supportive learning environment.
Kemampuan menulis guru di Indonesia tergolong rendah, hal ini dapat dibuktikan dengan tingkat publikasi ilmiah per tahunnya. Begitu banyak faktor yang menghambat para guru dalam berkarya. Salah satu alasan utama adalah permasalahan di mana guru belum mempunyai bekal yang cukup untuk memiliki kemampuan dan profesionalitas dalam hal kepenulisan. Permasalahan tersebut juga dialami oleh para guru Bahasa Inggris di lingkungan MGMP Kabupaten Grobogan dimana mereka kurang memperoleh update cara menulis ilmiah dan terlebih lagi bagaimana mempublikasikan karya mereka di era digital seperti ini. Jika ditilik lebih lanjut terdapat ketimpangan antara guru yang aktif menulis dan yang tidak aktif dalam bidang kepenulisan ilmiah. Tujuan diadakannya program pengabdian ini adalah untuk memberikan pendampingan kompetensi menulis bagi para guru sehingga para guru dapat saling bersinergi untuk membuahkan hasil karya sesuai dengan jengjang pendidikan yang mereka ampu yaitu jenjang SMP dan SMA. Metode pelaksanaan dari kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini meliputi beberapa aspek yaitu pendekatan dengan pihak MGMP Bahasa Inggris Kabupaten Grobogan melalui ketua rayon dan juga pihak penerbit Deepublish yang berada di Yogyakarta. Dari program ini didapatkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan motivasi menulis para guru. Selain dapat memberi angka kredit, karya guru tersebut nantinya akan dapat menjadi bahan ajar pendamping bagi para siswanya. Kegiatan dalam pengabdian ini sangat bermanfaat bagi MGMP Guru Bahasa Inggris Kabupaten Grobogan.The writing ability of teachers in Indonesia is relatively low, this can be proven by the level of scientific publications per year. There are so many factors that hinder teachers from working. One of the main reasons is the problem where teachers do not have sufficient provisions to have the ability and professionalism in terms of writing. This problem is also experienced by English teachers in the Grobogan Regency MGMP environment where they do not get updates on how to write scientifically and moreover how to publish their work in this digital era. If we look further, there is a gap between teachers who are active in writing and those who are not active in the field of scientific writing. The purpose of holding this service program is to provide writing competency assistance for teachers so that teachers can work together to produce works according to the level of education they are capable of, namely the junior high and high school levels. The implementation method of this community service activity includes several aspects, namely the approach with the English MGMP of Grobogan Regency through the rayon chairman and also the publisher Deepublish in Yogyakarta. From this program, it was found that there was an increase in the writing motivation of the teachers. Besides being able to give credit points, the teacher's work will later be able to become companion teaching materials for his students. Activities in this service are very useful for the Grobogan Regency English Teacher MGMP.
