Europe is on the way to build its own Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) independent from the existing U.S. and Russian systems already in orbit. The expenses of EUR 3.2 billion are only a fraction of the expected revenues and social benefits of Europe's system -Galileo. Location Based Services (LBS) have ever been recognised as the primary future market for Galileo in terms of the number of users and potential revenues. A service oriented approach was chosen to settle the Galileo system definitions to meet user requirements. The challenge of the AGILE -Application of Galileo in the LBS Environment -project is to deal with marketing, institutional, and technical aspects of the LBS market that may facilitate the acceptance and success of Galileo-based personal mobility solutions. This paper is based on the contribution to the AGIT conference [1] of the AGILE consortium.

Constant monitoring and control of parameters during road construction are significant for the quality and durability of the road. More than 90% of the total road network has an asphalt surface which must be regularly repaired or rebuild. An increasing lifetime will result in reduction of cost of road maintenance. Key factors are to optimally manage truck fleets, operate the paver, and steer the compactors. Any suboptimal operation within this chain may lead to a reduction in road quality. The ASPHALT project aims at developing a cost and precision optimized solution taking advantage of the future Galileo system and EGNOS. Thereby, the positioning system will be closely coupled with the machine control and monitoring system. This paper introduces the ASPHALT project, describes the envisioned GNSS receiver, the RTK solution to achieve the high precision position solution, and the EDAS implementation to provide continuous EGNOS correction data stream for position output a nd RTK support

The automotive sector requires ever higher availability, accuracy and reliability from the position solution. The demands of novel and innovative driver assistance systems can not be completely fulfilled, at an acceptable price, by current GNSS receivers. There is a need for a cost effective receiver so that driving assistance systems can be realised. In such applications a receiver has to deliver reliable and continuous position information even under difficult reception conditions. The project "Galileo Receiver for Mass Market Applications in the Automotive Area" (GAMMA-A) is the development of a costeffective triple-frequency receiver for GPS and Galileo that meets the future demanding standards of the automobile industry in particular, reliable high precision positioning. A general introduction into the GAMMA-A project, describing the motivation and objectives, the user requirements as well as the market potential is given. Selected core technology studies, specially, the baseband processing, multipath and interference mitigation strategies, and the real-time kinematic technology are discussed and results and outcomes are presented.
