PURPOSE: To verify the applicability of the protocol Overall Assessment of the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering - Adults (OASES-A), translated into Brazilian Portuguese, in a sample of adults who stutter. METHODS: The Brazilian Portuguese version of the OASES-A protocol was individually applied to 18 people who stutter. The classification of stuttering severity was based on the Stuttering Severity Instrument for Children and Adults (SSI-3) protocol. Translation and back-translation processes were carried out by specialists, considering semantic, conceptual, cultural, and idiomatic equivalences. RESULTS: There was no correlation between the severity degrees of stuttering assessed by the SSI-3 protocol and the self-assessment performed using the OASES-A. Subjects reported impairments in perceived fluency; speech ability; level of knowledge about stuttering and treatment options; use of confrontational techniques; quality of life. They also mentioned having difficulty coping with emotional states such as anxiety and embarrassment, and with communication in daily situations. CONCLUSION: The OASES-A protocol is useful in the assessment and treatment of stutterers, as it provides specialized speech-language pathologists with sutterers' self-perception regarding their communication difficulties and the impact of stuttering on their quality of life.
There was consistency between the versions generated during the translation of the questionnaire, allowing the formulation of its final version in Portuguese. Children with lower degrees of hearing loss and/or who use their hearing aids for longer periods have their daily activities less affected by the hearing loss. The ABEL questionnaire is an appropriate instrument to detail the development of auditory behaviors in children who use hearing aids.
Purpose To translate and adapt the assessment tool Language Use Inventory from English to Brazilian Portuguese. Methods The study was carried out in two stages. Once the publisher’s authorization was given, the process of translation and back-translation of the protocol was initiated, adapting it to sociocultural aspects, such as expressions, names, and adequate examples in Brazilian Portuguese. In order to investigate the internal reliability of the translation process, the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used. The second stage was a pilot study, in which the questionnaire was applied to 43 parents of children from 24 to 47 months old from a city in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The results were analyzed according to the total score and to the subscales of the questionnaire. The variables age range and parental level of education were also analyzed. Results The analysis using the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient showed high internal consistency (α>0,98) in almost all the subscales which means that the instrument adapted to Brazilian Portuguese can be used. In the pilot study, an age effect was found in the total score and in the LUI subscale scores, i.e., the older the children, the fewer gestures they used, with more words and syntactic constructions. Conclusion The Brazilian-Portuguese version of the LUI questionnaire seems to be a reliable translation of the original and a reliable instrument to evaluate preschoolers’ language pragmatics. After future detailed analyses, it will allow early diagnosis and intervention in children with language disorders.
Objective: To characterize neuropsychological aspects of 10-yearold children. Method: Out of 30 children, 26 cognitively normal 10-year-old public school students answered tests extracted from Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery: Children's Revision. The study was transversal. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis were carried out. Results: Most of the 10-year-old children retold a story (69.2%), understood it making correct inference (84.6%) and reproduced it adequately in writing (76.9%) -14.9% was the average number of incorrectly written words and 0.179 was the errors per written word coefficient. Besides, 53.8% showed logical thought process and 73.1% had a correct notion of "x more than…". They got five out of eight in the visuo-spatial test, an intermediary result. These results show that the tertiary areas of units II and III are developed in most 10-year-old children. The most frequent types of written mistakes were: oral influence (26.3%), multiple representation (22.5%) and omission (18.4%). As to coding principles, the mostly uncomplied with rule was vowel nasalization at end of syllable (23,53%). Conclusions: Ten-year-old children in the studied population understood and reproduced a story orally and in writing with a low coefficient error/word. The majority completed the visuospatial tests and presented logical thought process. When "x more than…" notion is absent it may be an indicator that all is not well in the reading/writing process. estatística descritiva e inferencial. Keywords
