Der Experimentalwettbewerb “Chemie entdecken” für Schülerinnen und Schüler der Klassenstufen 5 bis 10 aller Schulformen in Nordrhein‐Westfalen besteht nunmehr seit zehn Jahren. In diesem Zeitraum nahmen 56.312 Schülerinnen und Schüler teil, es fanden 10 Jahresfeiern mit insgesamt 2.726 Preisträgern und mehr als 70.000 Gästen statt – ein Anlass, kurz zurück zu blicken und eine Zwischenbilanz zu ziehen.
Der Frage Vanille oder Vanillin, Naturstoff oder Syntheseprodukt gingen 20 Schülerinnen und Schüler aus den Klassenstufen 9 bis 12 einen Labortag lang im Alfried‐Krupp‐Schülerlabor an der Ruhr‐Universität Bochum nach. Sie waren als erfolgreiche Teilnehmer der 2. Runde der Chemie‐Olympiade aus NRW der Einladung der Landesbeauftragten für die Chemie‐Olympiade, Birgit Vieler, und des Labors gefolgt, um anhand des Beispiels Vanillearoma Möglichkeiten der Gewinnung und Unterscheidung von natürlichen, naturidentischen und künstlichen Aromastoffen kennenzulernen. Das Projekt wurde an diesem Tag bilingual in englischer Sprache durchgeführt, kann aber auch in deutscher Sprache gebucht werden.
Im September 2008 wurde das Merck‐TU Darmstadt‐Juniorlabor an der Technischen Universität Darmstadt eröffnet, nachdem die Merck KGaA die Erstausstattung eines von der Universität grundsanierten Labors übernommen hatte. Der danach sofort einsetzende Zuspruch verdeutlicht, dass ein großer Bedarf an solchen Schülerlaborangeboten besteht: Innerhalb des ersten Jahres haben 2500, innerhalb des zweiten Jahres bereits 3000 Schülerinnen und Schüler an ein oder zwei Tagen zu einem ausgewählten Thema experimentiert, diskutiert und die Ergebnisse dokumentiert.
Vor welchen Herausforderungen steht die heutige Landwirtschaft? Welche Rolle spielt hierbei die Rapspflanze? Wie kann man Einfluss auf ihre Eigenschaften nehmen? Können Pflanzen Stress empfinden? Diese und viele weitere Fragen stehen am Beginn eines Labortags im “Baylab plants“ für Schülerinnen und Schüler der Stufen 8 bis 12 im Raum. Die folgenden sechs bis sieben Stunden intensiver Laborarbeit und wohldosierter Theorie schaffen schrittweise Klärung in entspannter Atmosphäre.
