There may be little benefit in providing specialist genetics services to all women with a family history of breast cancer. Further investigation of factors that may mediate the impact of genetic assessment is in progress and may reveal subgroups of women who would benefit from specialist genetics services.
Isolated human retinal arterioles dilate to bradykinin and increased flow in an NO-dependent manner. NO contributes, in part, to adenosine-induced vasodilation. Conversely, ROCK activation mediates myogenic tone and endothelin-1-induced vasoconstriction. Similarities in these vasoactive responses and the underlying mechanisms between human and porcine retinal arterioles support the latter as a viable experimental model of the human retinal microcirculation.
Name learning strategies including retrieval practice, semantic associations and imagery were compared in laboratory-based and real-life experiments. Experiments 1 and 2 studied expanding retrieval practice and a semantic association strategy as memory improvement techniques for learning proper names. Participants either retrieved or restudied names on the same, expanding schedule. After a short, filled interval, cued recall of names was about 250% better following retrieval than restudy and 200% better with than without semantic associations. Together, the techniques improved recall by 300-400%. In Experiment 3, retrieval practice was compared with an imagery mnemonic for name learning under real-life social conditions: Participants sought to learn the names of people they met at a party. Retrieval practice produced 50% higher recall after 24-72 hours but the imagery mnemonic was no more effective than non-directed instructions to learn names.
This research reports on a qualitative survey of hotel guest loyalty. The approach was unusual in several ways: It sought to measure loyalty in the general population of hotel users rather than selecting a population already known to be loyal, and instead of trying to identify personality traits in the guests’ psychology that might be important, or ranking features of the hotel that might be determining factors, guests were simply asked what the term hotel loyalty meant to them. This approach has the advantage of not being influenced by any particular theory or restricted by the scope of the questions asked. The outcome of the analysis of their responses is a model of hotel loyalty created directly from the guests’ own perceptions of loyalty. The model shows that “loyalty” is actually a dynamic concept balancing seven elements already found in previous research and involves an unstated or implied contract between the guest and the hotel. It also suggests that many of the determinants commonly held to influence loyalty are, in fact, not relevant.
Reptiles are one of the fastest growing sectors in the United States pet industry. Reptile‐associated salmonellosis (RAS) continues to be an important public health problem, especially among children. We investigated an outbreak of human Salmonella infections resulting from serotypes Cotham and Kisarawe, predominately occurring among children. An outbreak of illnesses was identified in persons with exposure to pet bearded dragon lizards. Human and animal health officials, in cooperation with the pet industry, conducted epidemiologic, traceback and laboratory investigations. Onsite sampling was conducted at two US breeding facilities, one foreign breeding facility, and a large pet retail chain. A total of 166 patients in 36 states were identified with illness onset dates from 02/2012–06/2014. The median patient age was 3 years (range, <1–79 years), 57% were aged ≤5 years, and 37% were aged ≤1 year. Forty‐four patients (37%) were hospitalized, predominantly children. Sampling at breeding facilities and a national pet store chain resulted in isolation of outbreak serotypes at each facility; isolation proportions ranged from 2%–24% of samples collected at each facility.Epidemiologic, microbiologic and traceback evidence linked an outbreak of uncommon Salmonella serotypes to contact with pet bearded dragons. The high proportion of infants involved in this outbreak highlights the need to educate owners about the risk of RAS in children and the potential for household contamination by pet reptiles or their habitats. Strategies should be developed to improve breeding practices, biosecurity and monitoring protocols to reduce Salmonella in the pet reptile trade.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
