There have been notable contradictions in some studies ofjuvenile sex offenders that have raised questions regarding assumptions underlying the development of specialized treatment programs for sex offenders. Strasberg (1978) perceived sex offenders as representing only a small portion of reported violent adolescents, and in an earlier work Atcheson and Williams (1954) reported that juvenile sex offenders tend to cure themselves and show low rates of recidivism. In direct contrast, Lewis, Shankok, and Pincus (1979) found striking similarities in behavioral history, social background, and neuropsychiatrics of sexually assaultive and nonsexually assaultive adolescents, whom they studied in a secure unit for violent, adolescent offenders. Sexually assaultive and nonsexually assaultive groups had similar histories including frequent violent, nonsexual activity since early childhood, physical abuse by parents, and prevalence of extreme violence in their homes. No significant differences were noted between the two groups in frequency of depressive symptoms, hallucinations, paranoid symptoms, or thought disturbances, although the two groups did demonstrate similar types of neurological dysfunction. Lewis et al. (1979) hypothesized that sexual violence represented only one type of assaultive behavior along the continuum of crimes committed by these youths, and the researchers questioned whether specialized treatment programs for sexually assaultive offenders are justified. The results of the Lewis et al. (1979) study seem important in evaluating juveniles who exhibit extreme, violent behavior, but their findings may be questioned on the basis of the limitations of their sample (i.e., only extremely violent offenders were studied) and on the criteria used for classifying the
The protection which the V-51R Ear Plug provides against high-intensity impulse noise was determined for simulated rapid-fire field conditions. Twenty enlisted men were exposed to 2, 4, and 6 pounds per square inch peak overpressures generated by a 105mm howitzer. Their temporary threshold shifts were then measured at 2000 and 4000 cycles per second. The results indicated that inserting the V-51R Ear Plug without checking its fit does not give adequate protection to all personnel. It was also found that a protection-checked ear (ear plug inserted to minimize the level of a reference sound) gave adequate protection with impulse pressures up to 8 psi.iii CONTENTS ABSTRACT .
This paper presents the findings of a study into current induction practices in foster care agencies throughout Victoria. Eighty per cent of registered agencies responded to a mailed questionnaire exploring: the means of initial contact for prospective foster families, information and pre-service education sessions, assessment of families and the ongoing relationship between new foster families and the foster care agency.Educational strategies are explored and the issue of worker continuity is discussed in relation to foster family retention and maintaining commitment through early placement difficulties.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
