La turistificación del patrimonio urbano latinoamericano ha demandado transformaciones materiales y simbólicas, que han derivado en el desplazamiento de colectivos específicos. La investigación toma al centro histórico de Cuenca en Ecuador como caso de estudio, debido al alcance de sus transformaciones y al éxito de sus campañas de marketing turístico, a partir de su declaratoria como Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad en 1999. La metodología propuesta se desarrolla en cuatro fases: caracterización del caso, análisis de planes y programas, estudio de proyectos construidos y análisis espacial del desplazamiento. Los resultados obtenidos muestran el enfoque economicista de los planes, la invisibilización de los desplazamientos provocados y ejemplifican algunas de las estrategias de los procesos de turistificación en áreas patrimoniales, donde el desplazamiento de colectivos populares se minimiza frente a la mejora del paisaje histórico urbano con fines turísticos, en oposición a principios de justicia social y territorial.
